For me at least, DT are not really an exception here. Although I don't approach them with the same level of warm-hearted irony as IM, I find myself unable to take them seriously and still enjoy them. To me both bands are just very good fun - and I'm more than certain it takes plenty of talent and hard work for a band to be "just very good fun". Here's my top five, maybe you'll find these songs crafty: 1. The Nomad 2. Judas Be My Guide 3. Blood Brothers 4. Can I Play With Madness 5. No More Lies    uh oh, looks like i will never be able to enjoy maiden if this is true, i cant stand the way that they seem to be taking the piss with all their over the top stage shows and stupid lyrics, vocals and riffs. I prefer my songs to be serious and meaningful, which i find in bands like metallica and DT cos they write about real things and rarely joke around, if Iron Maiden always joke around then i am not going to like them at all.

 now I've made IM sound like a bunch of jokers (well...); the cheese aside, they do put a lot of effort into their music and this effort is definitely there to be heard. Besided, Bruce Dickinson is one helluva singer, I can even remember him covering some Led Zep material very successfully (though can't remember which song it was and which album it was on), and that really says something.

Hey King of Loss, I don't say LaBrie is bad, he's ok foor a metal band, but obviously he's not in the level of Myung who in this moments is one of the best bass players I ever seen and Portnoy who also is among the best.

But I still can't find any logical structure in DT as I don't find in Bboom or Thrakk by King Crimson, and it's a shame, because most of the members of the band are very talented, sometimes making more melodies and trying the easy way instead of showing off is much better.

Steve Harris, the bassist and primary songwriter for Iron Maiden, is heavily influenced by prog rock acts... they even do a GREAT cover of Jethro Tull's "Cross Eyed Mary" that rivals the original.

Anyway, Maiden are the band that saved me from listening to radio.  For those that can't see progressive influence in their music I point them to their mid 80s albums...

PIECE OF MIND is the first album with outright prog influences... a lot of lengthy instrumental sections, very melodic, and symphonic-structured songs.  "Revelations" is a song with various non-repeating movements.

POWERSLAVE pushes a little closer towards a progressive sound...  The second half of the album is dominated by lengthy suites with an emphasis again on complex instrumental passages.

SOMEWHERE IN TIME incorperated synths into their music, which was a disaster for most rock bands but Maiden was able to do it without compromising their original sound, unlike traditional progressive bands like Yes.

SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON is their proggiest release... a sparkling concept album.  If anyone listens to this album and doubts a progressive influence, they simply aren't listening enough.  A masterpiece.

Great band... definitely in my top 5, and they put on a great live show.

So many great songs. not prog though, but close enough to deserve some mention on a progressive site.
