If you post my picture, I'll deny it's me!! Besides, how could you prove it? You could anyone's picture and say it's me, right?
Peace.

ELP............hummmmmmmmmmmm
They would hands down win the award for wasting the most time of any prog band, years and years of it after 'Brain salad surgery'. Works vol.I was good, but really, where are all those albums they COULD have done between 1975 and 'Black moon'? They broke up over egos, so they ultimatley ruined their own career.
Awful really, coz, their first few albums are incredible, but i could never say they were the best prog band, simply because their keyboard dominated sound just did not have the balance for me..and I am a keyboard player! I just think Yes, Genesis and Floyd are the top then ELP are in the '2nd rank' with Tull, Rush, Crimson and a few of the newer bands.
Having said that, Keith wipes the floor with every other keyboard player in technique terms.

I personally find ELP very difficult to listen to but I just don't think I have spun them enough - has anyone else taken a long time to get into them? I will never say never though but at present I prefer Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull and Genesis!

ELP are the second greatest prog band after the Nice. Genesis, Yes and the rest linger a long way behind. All good musuicians, some good songs but i'd rather cut my legs and arms off than listen to a whole Genesis or Yes album. At least ELP were showmen who were the top musicians of their time, Genesis were middle class twats who were legends in their own toilets, Yes were a bit better. And as for the prat who thinks Rush are prog...get a grip and take more prozac.

ELP didn't last long enough or produce enough to earn any distinction
as the greatest. They were essential, but not the greatest.

A funny story about "The Barbarian". I had a music class in high school that was taught by a very elderly woman, and one day she aked us all to bring in some records we liked so she could hear what kids were listening to. We all brought our favorites, and on the third day or so,when it came my turn, I took up ELP's first album of which "The Barbarian" is the lead track. She listened about 45 seconds or so, then stood up and took the needle off the record. I thought she was disgusted, and she remained expressionless. She gave me a quick look, then walked over to the piano, sat down, and proceeded to play a piano version the barbarian. Flawlessly. I literally could not believe that this old woman was whipping out a piano version of an ELP tune with such incredible authority. She was really, really good. After she finished she gently explained the origin of the Bartok piece( we had no clue) and said she played it at her finals recital in college and still played it frequently for her own enjoyment. Wow. I'm sure she just wanted to see the look on my face. We also played Knife Edge for her and she recognized the Bach bit in the middle, though she couldn't recall the name of it. She quickly became a favorite teacher and I still remember her quite fondly. Just thought I'd share.

Just a shame that ELP were a bunch of pretty boys, pathetically attempting to make some sophisticated music, and failing miserably. Sure they put a good show - they had to compensate for the horrible music.

I think they should get some credit (along with Yes) for being the biggest prog band ever (along with Yes) regardless of their music.

Would you know ''sophisticated music'' if it came and poked you in the eye? ELP were loud and bombastic. Not for everyone.Get over it.

When ELP was good they where as good as it gets like Tarkus,Trilogy or Brain Salad Surgery but when they where bad they where really bad like on Works vol 1 & 2 they gave prog a bad name.I think if they hired a full time axeman they would have been worlds better but with the drum, bass and keyboard foremat they painted themselves into a corner which the critics loved to exploit to rip progressive music which helped lead to the popularity of stupid and simple music which curses us today.

Music critics are useless.Their own ignorance and failure to recognies their own limitations has caused many of the problems in music IMO.Trying to make a virtue out of ignorance is one of the great curses that stops music evolving.Punk found many allies amongst music critiics because it is easy to understand.John Peel (God rest his soul) was also something of an accomplice in all this ..sadly.

Works Vol. 1 is my 5 favorite album of all time... if that album gave prog a bad name... then prog was never any good to begin with...
And the fact that ELP were only bass keyboard and drums.. is what made them unique, not limit them. In the studio Greg could play "an axe" as well as the next guitarist, so I don't think they were ever limited.. and actually never been known for being limited. Keith has a lead guitarist now.. and you can't even tell he's there.
And not even the onset of punk helped lead us to the stupid music we listen to today... that we did on our own.. as sad as that is!

I agree with your comment about ELP being the best when at their peak. No doubt about that. And actually, I would push the beginning of the decline to Works 2, though Works 1 began to show that ELP as a band had reached their limits with their particular brand of prog.
The failure was with the band as a group (as opposed to the individuals in the group). Their chemistry was exhausted and they weren't imaginative enough or inventive enough or ???? to keep their sound alive in the changing times (like KC and Yes did, for instance). Maybe that was for the better, maybe not.
But adding a guitarist would not have help, at least not an axe-shredder type of of guitarist. That would have brought their sound down, imo.

After YES, ELP were the greatest prog band of all time. I do agree that it went downhill after Works 1. The new DVD offers some interesting insights into the mechanics of this band. They even take the piss out of the 'Love Beach' sleeve & reveal it wasn't an album they wanted to make.
