I'd like to throw the band "Nektar" in the list. Maybe not one of the greatest progressive bands ever, but certainly their early works such as "Journey . . ." and "Remember . . ." are quite good.

That so called skinny guy in the middle is Tank man Carl Palmer..Hows about fit as a fiddle & would snap your neck in one swoop.

Give it a rest, KE9 - and if you're going to set up any more alternate identities, try altering your font, not centering your text, using a spell check and using a non ELP related nickname.

K9 must you be so offensive I really like the way you ELP people stick up for your band but you cannot force your views down others throats. As for being the best prog band get a life they were good but not in the same league as Yes My favourite ELP moment is as a 16 year old in Blankenberg Belgium on school hols coming out of the pub and around ten of us singing and playing ' Knife Edge' all the way back to our digs.Yes,Elp were a great prog band, but not the best.

You are extremely gifted with that olifactory radar of yours K9.What stench is it that enables you to tell.As for comparing a very limited ELP with Yes it is you who needs to perambulate into the real world.Yes are still as they always were the best live band in the business and can never be labelled stagnant on stage.Perhaps you meant pungent or maybe your nose is way too close to your chocolate starfish for one.

ha ha a battle between Yes and ELP fans, I love it. The Genesis fanatics are a much mellower bunch!

Mr Fragile
What bollox duth talketh
Yes were not always the best live band.I have many live recording of yes & most are really bad.You know the good/bad thing with ELP if anything that they are so good live you can find it hard to distinguish the live from the studio sometimes.

I just bought ELP's first three. I am absolutely amazed by the drumming. Top notch.

I'll probably get shot for saying this......
I think Yes is one of those bands that is better on the albums than they are live. They are good live and can be great live but they rarely bring a dynamic to any given song that makes you prefer the live version of a song over a studio version. (talking real yes here - pre 90210). I know some of you will disagree. But, I am a person that loves live music and I still prefer Yes on the studio albums over the live stuff 99% of the time. They don't butcher the songs by any stretch, but they don't add much to them either.
On the other hand ELP is one of those bands that adds magic to the music on stage. Hoedown is ok, but rather stuffy on the album...but live WOOOO!! Tarkus just flat out kicks ass live. I could go on and on. Threefates will probably try to ban me from the site for saying this, but the only exception to this IMO is Greg Lake doing his ballads. I always wanted him to STFU and get on with the good stuff. I always felt it ruined the flow of the show. I like his ballads on the albums, just not live.

They are both great live bands (no ly syncing as far as i know), but in the beggining, ELP had more energy and put on a better show, but IMO Yessongs is better than Welcome Back.

Yeah, it's hard to explain really. I wasn't trying to trash Yes in the least. I've seen them many times and enjoyed every show until Union. If you tried to pin me down I would even say that they are my favorite band. Yes - > Drama $$$$
But there was something totaly electric when ELP used to play. I remember the first time I heard Fanfare for the Common Man live. The timp hits followed by the horns going off is like soul destroying good in person.

I'm probably going more from experiences at the concerts than the live albums. The live Yes recordings from the 70s have never done them justice. I don't know if it was playing in the round, really crappy mobile recording setups or what, but they sounded 1000x better in person than YesSongs and YesShows and the DVDs/Tapes lead one to believe.

even their live records from 90's-00's are better now with new technology. I love my live at the house of blues DVD. Howe is a beast on that.

On the whole, I'd agree with you. Whenever I hear Steve Howe staggering
his way seemingly inexpertly through the opening of Close to the Edge I
shudder. However, on the Yes Symphonic DVD they play Ritual - a song
I've never liked all that much for numerous reasons - and they really
transform it into something special. But yes, their live work is rarely
an improvement on the studio work.

Emerson Lake & Palmer are absolutely overrated! Here seams that only ELP and Yes are considered for the best prog band...i think you're missing a lot of othere great bands!
Just for example you're talking about a prog trio (elp) and what about Quatermass??? Probably they were even more talented than ELP, surely more inspired!..but seems that no one cares.
ELP are Overrated: great musicians but quiet uninspired and emotionless!!!
