  1. YES    (UNDISPUTED)
  2. Genesis
  3. ELP    (Great Band, excellent musicians, Emerson is undeniable top 5 musicains in prog, horrible post-1977, and Love Beach)
  4. Jethro Tull (I'll get disagreed with A LOT on that)
  5. Pink Floyd
  6. Renaissance (I'll get disagreed with A LOT on that too ha ha)
  7. King Crimson (would be higher if it wasn't for Fripp's damn improv/experiments - can't stand that nonsense!)
  8. Camel
  9. VdGG
  10. Gentle Giant
  11. Caravan
  12. PFM

1556.  Asia ()

......concratulations, that's one of the better lists I've seen on this site so far, exept for my own ones...

Thanks man -------- and it's debatable whether asia deserves to be on a prog list, even if it as #1556.

yes, in fact it is...if it hadn't been for their debut-album, they would have been under the magic 2000-level.. Now. let me make two lists (see below)

ELP....Every LP is Pomp...Pretentious...Pressed by Poofs...

Not really, but they're FAR from my first tier of prog bands.  I think they're great showmen, but it doesn't really come thru on the albums....even the live ones.  I guess you had to be there to see the boys leaping from instrument to instrument....but the LPs are a bore.  You have to wade thru too much shyte to get to an entertaining passage.

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

I know everyone has their own opinion here about ELP but I just can't stomach them.  I have tried, I honestly have.  But, they are worse than fingernails on a chalk board (to me anyways).  I still think they look like the Bee Gee's on Love Beach.

So to answer the original question - NO!  Not by a long shot are they the best.

It's funny how diverse prog is.  I absolutely adore elp.  I've found for some reason that many Rush fans don't like ELP for some reason.  Can't explain it.

I could never get into rush myself.  I have 2112-Moving Pictures, it always seems like metal-hardrock-pop, never as classy as the british stuff but certainly not bad.  oh well.   godf I'm rambling.

The wonderful thing about music is is that there is plenty of it for all different tastes.

Judging by your signature, we can at least agree that Genesis is among the best!

ELP are in the top six prog bands ever:

King Crimson

Genesis

Yes

ELP

Pink Floyd

Jethro Tull

Put them in any order you like...it doesn't matter.

Rush are a great band and are one of my favourites as well, but the cornerstones of the genre are the above without any question whatsoever.(''But you forgot Gentle Giant!!'' I hear a few loud cries )

BTW Any chance of a sensible discussion about ELP for a change ie no name calling,no tantrums etc??

They are among my top-favourites, but NO, not the best...sorry, don't agree Genesis (70-76) is the best IMO

I think you'll find that while early Genesis were all asleep on stage ELP were certainly not.

I so agree, Barbarian. ELP = energetic likable prog. I definitely rate them in the top 3 of my favourites!!

& Your number 2 dare i ask?

Could it be KC?????????????????

Here are my top 3 BUT in no particular order (tis too hard )

  • ELP
  • KC
  • Yes

very predictable I know - but that was what I listened to in my early teens and still listen to.

my fourth choice would be Jethro Tull and after that a gap to the rest

One of my favourite but not the best - Genesis are!

Probably the first supergroup, a real milestone but also a bit overboard with the Keith's keyboards (listen the confusion in Picture at an Exibition). Greg was the mind but Keith the boss! Wonderful Greg ballads (Still... you turn me on and the pacifist Lucky Man) and amazing Carl percussions (Tank, oh God!).

Stay Up and Prog forever!

I've only heard "Living Sin" song, but I want to hear some more as I loved it.  What is the best album to get?

IMO: Emerson, Lake and Palmer (1st)

Then just go on with the rest of their first five albums
