They were part of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal". Not only part of it, but one of the front runners of the genre - Def Leppard practically defined their corner of NWOBHM.

As did Iron Maiden.

I think you weren't there because you don't seem to understand what metal is, if you don't think that either Maiden or Leppard were it.

Would you like some ketchup with those words - or just salt?

You couldn't be more wrong about me and labels - the only labels I care about are the ones in the centre of the vinyl.

You're basically disagreeing with me, everyone else in the known universe, and the bands themselves - which you're free to do, of course, but just a few bits and pieces that MAY help you realise your mistake - don't take my word for it;

(from an interview)

Steve Harris starts talking first about the inspiration behind calling the band 'Iron Maiden'.

"Did you ever see the film 'The Man In The Iron Mask'?" He asks. "Well I saw it on television and that's when the name first occurred to me. Although strictly speaking I believe an actual 'Iron Maiden' is an altogether more vicious torture device ... you know, it's a metal case with these nails set inside of it and if you fasten it over someone's head they get kind of spiked. Very unpleasant."

But a hell of a good name for a heavy metal band all the same.

"I guess so. As long as you don't think about the unfortunate Margaret Thatcher connections."

What made you form an HM group at a time when New Wave was the only thing that was really happening?

"It was just something that I wanted to do, I couldn't have started a punk band ... that would have been against my religion."

Or try Google - type in either band's name, and the words heavy metal, and see what pops up.

Not convinced?

You're wierd!

I seriously think you must have been in a coma to have missed Def Leppard amidst all those other great heavy metal bands.

Ive already conceded that maiden are metal if you look at a previous post. Well gave in actually. Unconvinced about Leppard tho. For a start in that HM top 100 Led Zep IV is in there , and thats not metal! The BBc site actually calls Leppard "Melodic Rock". When does Hard/Heavy Rock become meatal anyway?

Iron Maiden were at the forefront of the NWOBHM - so they can't have been first...

Interesting question!

I could write an essay on it...

Here's one someone else wrote earlier - I don't agree with all of it, but it definitely started with Blue Cheer.

Prog Rock is pretentious Heavy Metal's even more pretentious little brother - and don't forget it!

Quote from Wikipedia:
"The early heavy metal bands, like Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, UFO and Black Sabbath are often called hard rock bands rather than heavy metal, especially those bands whose sound was more similar to traditional rock music. In general, the terms heavy metal and hard rock are often used interchangeably, in particular when discussing the 1970s."

Conclusion: 70's hard rock IS heavy metal.

If 70's bands (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath...) weren't heavy metal then 80's (and late 70's) bands wouldn't be called NEW WAVE of Brithish Heavy Metal!

These guys invented metal and coined the phrase.

Hard rock/heavy rock/heavy metal were pretty much interchangeable in the 70's.

I voted "No" because they are already there :) They are definitely my favorite Progressive artist, sorry Traditional Prog artists, but DT has already shattered it.
