I'd never thought that, but I guess I never listen to more than one record before putting something else on.

I partly disagree and partly agree with this statement...but i'm 70% disagree. The way i see it, prog MEANS stepping away from musical "rules". If you keep the same measure pattern, chord progression, and song buildup as any other song, but make it catchy and get a wad of cash, you are the opposite of prog. The last part of that is why i partly agree with your statement; modern music stays WELL within the boundaries of musical rules set by the 80's and 90's. To make a generalization; all teh instruments are the same, the vocals either screaming or nasaly, and you can always tell when the band is going to hit the next chord and what it will sound like.
Radiohead, however, does not fall into this generalization. Much like other definitive prog bands who convey their music with periods of symphonic melodies or psychadelic sounds, they use computery-robot sounds. Which is cool, because they definitely pulled it off, but i do agree with Bulva that they always convey the same expression/emotion. that's what i have to say about "what about radiohead".

I'd rather see LTJ Bukem in the archives than rubbish like Styx!! ![](smileys/smiley36.gif)
All:
The Radiohead debate will rage for ever, or at least until they decide to release an album that is either undeniably prog or undeniably NOT prog! As it is I think they hang somewhere in the middle, but not uncomftably so. I'm happy to see them in the archives - more so than Styx!! ![](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)
The genre has to evolve - progress if you like - and Radiohead are pretty much where the genre is today IMO. If you dont like it, then dont listern to it. Carry on morris dancing to your Gentle Giant records folks, but if the genre was to survive, it needed to move on and rediscover some credibility with folks under 40 years of age. Thank Radiohead and TMV, among others for making this happen.

After all, if the genre didn't evolve we would all end up like a load of old Elvis fanatics, meeting up at seaside locations for hushed up prog weekends in comedy Peter Gabriel head masks, getting jeered at by the 'youth of today'

Releasing an unprog record wouldn't help at all - I think everyone agrees they've done at least one.

I think only for introducing such a commotion and dissention into the world of music (especially into the world of progressive music) Radiohead members deserve to be shot. ![](smileys/smiley36.gif)
Believe it or not, I even downloaded this "Paranoid Android" and listened to it. I could hardly stand these 6 minutes! I think that Radiohead music is attractive to people with unstable nervous system or some nervous disorder. After this music one is tempted to cower in a corner and shoot himself (or maybe inflict some minor form of self-damage or damage to others).
Radiohead sounds like a mix of Nirvana, Oasis, Chemical Brothers and suchlike, and I find it shamefully melancholic and aggressive too. It's a pity kids below 21 are allowed to listen to that As to whether they are prog or not -- I'd say it is certainly disgraceful to put them in the same row as PINK FLOYD, GENESIS, ELP, KING CRIMSON, ÄNGLAGÅRD, YES and many many others ... I think they are better off residing at the website dedicated to music ā la Nirvana, Oasis, Chemical Brothers, U2 etc ...
Now, note that I did not attack any Radiohead fans, I just voiced my honest opinion about the group itself.

Well, prog of non-prog, OK Computer is a fantastic album that many progfans like, and that's what it's all about in the 1st place.
Having said that, OK Computer is progressive in form, Kid A even more, but is it what they (who?) call "progrock"?
Well, what is prog anyway? Does anyone have a good definition of prog? This will help the discussion a bit further.
(I hope )

By the way, I love Paranoid Android, one of the best pieces of music I heard in the past ten years. It even beats a lot of prog for me, and I am a huge prog fan. And my nervous system is quite allright ![](smileys/smiley36.gif) .

not to try and generalize, but its sad that most wont accept that sort
of evolution or radical change which is indeed a essential part in the
progression of this music (no pun intended)

The most depressing band I've ever heard. Don't know if the lyrics are depressing or not but the music certainly is. I don't listen to music to feel suicidal but if I listened to this band long enough I'd probably end up slitting my throat!

I like Radiohead, but they don't "feel" prog to me. I'm not saying that they arent mind because prog has become a very broard spectrum according to the archives.

I can!!! To me they are definately more prog than Radiohead. Or they are as prog as each other, but poles apart in the spectrum. Sorry, mixed metaphors.
