I know most people hear buy music and my question is for these people.  Where do you get your prog music from?  I'm not talking about  bands like Yes and Pink Floyd.  Their music is easy to find and affordable.  I mean the more foreign underground bands this site has gotten me into such as PFM, Magma, Banco, and even Camel.  These bands are impossible to find in stores.  Then when I go on Amazon a single 45 minute album by these bands often costs thirty bucks and upwards.  I'm just a teenager and even when I get a job this summer I still won't be able to afford all the music I want.  Is there any store or website you get prog from at a reasonable cost?  Downloading is no option for me and my piece of crap computer.

I just browse the local stores, sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I don't.

I love the Used and New feature on many online sites, like Amazon.  CDs don't deteriorate over time like vinyl and tape so getting them used (as long as they are clean) is as good as new.

But yeah I wish there were a magical site to buy CDs for $10 a pop.  I scour the net high and low for certain CDs.  Sometimes you just get lucky.  A really really hard CD to find is Peter and the Wolf: A Prog Fairy Tale, but I just happen to come across it on Musicstack.com and got the only copy for a really nice price.

Other albums like Jon Anderson's 3 Ships are just going to cost you $100 if you want 'em!

But please, share any good online catalogues or sites!

My favorites are Amazon (of course) and Musicstack.  CDBaby also has some good stuff.

Oh and I've also found that aritsts' websites will also have direct deals from the publisher or some small online retailer.  Such is the case with Yezda Urfa.

hehe im lucky in mn,theres a lake that all the hippiues go to, and one of the hippies that lives there set up an all 70's cd store. its pretty sweet!

I'm a poor guy, don't have much money, but I spend it well.

I've got a list of 200 cd's I want to purchase, but I don't want to spent more than 10 euro on each, so some moths I buy none and some moths I buy 10 or even more. on average I spent som e100 euro's a month on cd's, but some months it will be double, and other it will be nothing.

Once you know which cd's you want to buy, stick to that and search hard on all possible shops etc. to find what you want, sometimes you will have to pay more for an album than you innitially wanted too, but too compensate you can always deside not to buy something else.

When in real doubt download the album, and decide on buying it at a higher price if the download was good enough, or decide not to buy it if it's not worth the extra (over budget)money.

import titles are $13-18 compared to most internet
retailers $23-36, and he is fast, friendly and will tell
you if he doesnt have something via email
communications.

Yeah I've seen synphonic's stuff before - impressive catalogue.

Switching gears a bit, there was a time where I downloaded a good bit of music.  For me at least though, the music sounds so much better when you actually buy the CD.  Maybe its trying to get your money's worth or something....  But its so refreshing to finally go for it and spend the 30 bucks on the CD you've debated to get, and discovering its beauty.

A good example is Red by KC.  My friend lent a burned copy of the album to me; I was impressed but it wasn't until I bought it for myself and really listened to it before I "understood."

Oh WOW people there are TONS of good internet sites that sell mostly prog, prog-metal and/or psych records. Maybe not as much of the 70's stuff but most the modern bands can be found at one of these places:

I first find out either threw this fabulous web site or from my drummer's dad a deffinet cornacopia of knowlage.  Then I go and try to order directly from the bands or use my local record store and have them order my new treats for me.

Yes synphonic.8m.com is very very good. Speedy service and very friendly.

Also, i have a record about 20 min. or so away. They have a great selection. Also, I can find alot of good stuff (GG, KC, and others) at regular on-line stores (ie Circuit City or Sam Goodey). And as the others suggested there are alot of random sites that are good as well.

Chain Stores for the 'basics' (YES, RUSH, GENESIS etc)

Second Hand CD Stores are always pleasantly surprising for me. The 'quality' stores ALWAYS have tons of vinyl (usually hidden in the back or downstairs) But the CD selection in most thrift stores usually yields one or two gems, for low cost.

Anything I can't find that I REALLY want, I venture online, through the ProgArchives link to cdUniverse or by going to Amazon.com, Chapters/Indigo.ca, or even eBay! If you don't mind "used" copies of CD's, you can get plenty of deals on eBay (plus 5$ shipping of course)

My favourites are definitely looking through second hand local stores, used section on Amazon, e-bay has been useful (managed to pick up 10 camel albums on there) and record fairs. If all this fails then it is worth searching the web for specialist sites.

Has Prog Archives thought about doing a mail order service??!

I get mine each month from a shadey guy known only as 'Big Fish' who I meet in an alleyway. I ask him 'Are the dolphins swimming tonight?' if he says 'The man from Del Monte says yes' then we excahnge cash for hardcore, class A prog, and I dissapear into the night.

Failing that I just order what I want from Amazon or buy it from a record shop...

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
