I know most people hear buy music and my question is for these people. Where do you get your prog music from? I'm not talking about bands like Yes and Pink Floyd. Their music is easy to find and affordable. I mean the more foreign underground bands this site has gotten me into such as PFM, Magma, Banco, and even Camel. These bands are impossible to find in stores. Then when I go on Amazon a single 45 minute album by these bands often costs thirty bucks and upwards. I'm just a teenager and even when I get a job this summer I still won't be able to afford all the music I want. Is there any store or website you get prog from at a reasonable cost? Downloading is no option for me and my piece of crap computer.

I love the Used and New feature on many online sites, like
Amazon. CDs don't deteriorate over time like vinyl and tape so
getting them used (as long as they are clean) is as good as new.
But yeah I wish there were a magical site to buy CDs for $10 a
pop. I scour the net high and low for certain CDs.
Sometimes you just get lucky. A really really hard CD to find is
Peter and the Wolf: A Prog Fairy Tale, but I just happen to come across
it on Musicstack.com and got the only copy for a really nice price.
Other albums like Jon Anderson's 3 Ships are just going to cost you $100 if you want 'em!
But please, share any good online catalogues or sites!
My favorites are Amazon (of course) and Musicstack. CDBaby also has some good stuff.

Oh and I've also found that aritsts' websites will also have direct
deals from the publisher or some small online retailer. Such is
the case with Yezda Urfa.

I'm a poor guy, don't have much money, but I spend it well.
I've got a list of 200 cd's I want to purchase, but I don't want to
spent more than 10 euro on each, so some moths I buy none and some
moths I buy 10 or even more. on average I spent som e100 euro's a month
on cd's, but some months it will be double, and other it will be
nothing.
Once you know which cd's you want to buy, stick to that and search hard
on all possible shops etc. to find what you want, sometimes you will
have to pay more for an album than you innitially wanted too, but too
compensate you can always deside not to buy something else.
When in real doubt download the album, and decide on buying it at a
higher price if the download was good enough, or decide not to buy it
if it's not worth the extra (over budget)money.

synphonic.8m.com, YES and very good prices, most
import titles are $13-18 compared to most internet
retailers $23-36, and he is fast, friendly and will tell
you if he doesnt have something via email
communications.

Yeah I've seen synphonic's stuff before - impressive catalogue.
Switching gears a bit, there was a time where I downloaded a good bit
of music. For me at least though, the music sounds so much better
when you actually buy the CD. Maybe its trying to get your
money's worth or something.... But its so refreshing to finally
go for it and spend the 30 bucks on the CD you've debated to get, and
discovering its beauty.
A good example is Red by KC. My friend lent a burned copy of the
album to me; I was impressed but it wasn't until I bought it for myself
and really listened to it before I "understood."

Oh WOW people there are TONS of good internet sites that sell mostly prog, prog-metal and/or psych records. Maybe not as much of the 70's stuff but most the modern bands can be found at one of these places:
Laser's Edge - http://www.lasercd.com/default.asp - www.lasercd.com/default.asp
Kinesis - http://www.kinesiscd.com/storeframe1.htm - www.kinesiscd.com/storeframe1.htm
Wayside - http://www.waysidemusic.com/default.asp - www.waysidemusic.com/default.asp
ZNR - http://www.znrcds.com - www.znrcds.com
M&M - http://www.mandmmusic.com - www.mandmmusic.com
And another great site for those in Europe is probably the Freak Emporium - http://www.freakemporium.com - www.freakemporium.com
If you STILL can't find what you are looking for then GEMM or MusicStack is the final option!

Yes synphonic.8m.com is very very good. Speedy service and very friendly.
Also, i have a record about 20 min. or so away. They have a great selection. Also, I can find alot of good stuff (GG, KC, and others) at regular on-line stores (ie Circuit City or Sam Goodey). And as the others suggested there are alot of random sites that are good as well.

Chain Stores for the 'basics' (YES, RUSH, GENESIS etc)
Second Hand CD Stores are always pleasantly surprising for me. The
'quality' stores ALWAYS have tons of vinyl (usually hidden in the back
or downstairs) But the CD selection in most thrift stores usually yields one or two gems, for low cost.
Anything I can't find that I REALLY want, I venture online, through the
ProgArchives link to cdUniverse or by going to Amazon.com,
Chapters/Indigo.ca, or even eBay! If you don't mind "used" copies of
CD's, you can get plenty of deals on eBay (plus 5$ shipping of course)

My favourites are definitely looking through second hand local stores, used section on Amazon, e-bay has been useful (managed to pick up 10 camel albums on there) and record fairs. If all this fails then it is worth searching the web for specialist sites.
Has Prog Archives thought about doing a mail order service??!

I get mine each month from a shadey guy known only as 'Big Fish' who I meet in an alleyway. I ask him 'Are the dolphins swimming tonight?' if he says 'The man from Del Monte says yes' then we excahnge cash for hardcore, class A prog, and I dissapear into the night.
Failing that I just order what I want from Amazon or buy it from a record shop...

Amazon Market place is a good all rounder, be prepared to wait a while for some though considering how reasonable it can be it's worth the wait. I have had no problems with quailty or condition of anything (except a brand new CD that was from Amazon itself and wasn't even PROG!) One guy from teh MArket Place sold me Electric Savage by Colosseum II for a bargain and it was on vinyl and it came with a burnt CD copy! best of both worlds
Syn-Phonic is awesome and I have to say the place where I have found the most rare stuff. Greg Walker has an excellent list and compiled in an interesting way as it's via country of origin which really works for prog. I had a hell of a time tracking down a copy of Movin' On by Circus (which incidentally is great), Greg had it at a nice price and it was very easy to pay via paypal and I was really impressed by with the shipping time.
Cyclops is another cool site with a lot of coverage of most prog. Haven't ordered from them personally but it looks good and it's in the UK so that makes it handy for us in the UK. Recommended on Jerry Lucky's Progressive Rock Files along with Syn-Phonic so sure to be a good resource.
Of course sometimes you can't beat a proper browse through vinyl in the flesh and it's got to be fairs and record shops for that namely Second Sounds in Tunbridge Wells for rare stuff and sheer delight of walking back into the 70's atmosphere and Criminal Records in the same town for a good all round selection - both very reasonable and run by nice, helpful guys - Dean (Second Sounds) & Dan (Criminal)
Happy hunting

If you are in the UK, I can recommend a couple of great places to try. Firstly, try Malcolm Parker at GFT Ltd. He has his own record label, Cyclops, which is definately worth trying out (get some of his samplers). He is based in Tolworth, Surrey, and his web site is http://www.gft-cyclops.co.uk - www.gft-cyclops.co.uk .
Alternatively, you can try Will at Caerllysi Music in Cardiff, who is the UK's Main distributer for Glass Hammer, Iluvatar, Cyan, Anekdoten and a number of other bands, whose music are therefore the cheapest in UK. He can be checked out at http://www.caerllysimusic.co.uk - www.caerllysimusic.co.uk . Both guys are friendly, knowledgable and provide a top class service.
The third source I would mention is the Classic Rock Society, based in Rotherham, who put on gigs and have their own shop. You can catch them on http://www.classicrocksociety.com - www.classicrocksociety.com . I hope that helps Brits find good music, anyway, if I can be of any further help on this matter, please feel free to pop something into my inbox!

Amazon.Uk has recently proved a gold mine for a lot of prog, all the 3 CD box sets of prog rock are there cheap. Touch, Khan, East Of Eden albums have recently appeared on Eclectric Records; God Speed You Black Emperor, Mount Zion etc, along with all the recent Cuneiform releases all are available from Amazon.UK.
And for the more obscure releases especially by European mainland labels, Leicester-based Ultima Thule record & CD shop, is where I go.

I would definitely recommend Greg Walker at Syn-phonic. He
(almost) always has anything I need and is extremely nice and
prompt. I always get my order within 3 business days. His
prices are tough to beat, too.
I lucked out and found the first four Camel albums at my local downtown
record store. But the mega-chain stores here (Best Buy, Borders)
don't have anything.

1. Me and my friends, we organise meetings where we listen to each other's new cd's.
2. I'm subscriber to a great Dutch progressive rockmagazine (iO - Pages). I've become very experienced in reading and interpreting reviews
3. There's Amazon too, for lots of soundbites.
4. There's ProgArchives ! Lots of reviews and many mp3's, showing complete songs! A great help for buying records, I must say.

In Cologne there is Saturn, a record shop where you canget almost anything. they have a huge store. If they just ran out of a record they sell you can order it there. Then there is a good import shop too. If that doesn't help we order the records directly from the homepage of the artists. Also there are severale 2nd hand shops here. And regular 2nd-hand fairs.

this guy's site, then noticed he lives right near my place...so i
ramble on over for a visit and was totally blown away by his inventory

literally
thousands upon thousands of cd's (and dvd's too) of extremely rare and
hard-to-find stuff. and all of it is exclusively progressive rock
music... nothing else ...i was amazed and ended up staying there for
hours...lost track of time...
he allowed me to open anything i was interested in to have a sample listen before buying...
he also has some personal contacts with several california based prog groups...spock's beard, etc.
and was partially responsible for bringing Änglagård to usa...

I know how you feel. I too am a student without a job. I live in Canada: where the only big prog act is Rush, and you can't buy their albums anywhere. I went to my local CD store yesterday, and ask the clerk if the store can order vinyl. He replied: "What's that?" The city I live in is becoming more and more populous, but we have no stores. By that I mean we have one bookstore and one music store in the whole city, repeat: CITY. Nobody will work in the service industry, because there are three oilsands processing plants here, and everyone works in those. My mom is afraid of the internet, so Amazon isn't an option. I can't take it much longer!

well for me its a little hard to find progressive music, but sometimes i found albums in a music store but not too much.
i bougth recently tarkus.
but i use to search for prog music in another kind of buisness.beacuse of the price and the dificult way to get it. i try to exchange albums with other prog fans.
and i often go to what we call the "tianguis" jeje this like a underground market out of the law, if you know what i mean.
and i know a guy that provides me this music.
