Radiohead is...well, I don't really know. But they belong here as much as The Mars Volta does. (If styx appears, I see no reason to exclude Radiohead).

except radiohead are just alt rock whilst mars volta are actually prog, a concept album full of suites that can last up to half an hour is as prog as it gets whilst radiohead offer nothing to do with prog. |

Nothing? I think that's a little juvenile. They're more prog than Sigur Ros.... Gaston |

Frenchie, with respect, that is utter rubbish. This incessant and obsessive categorising is just silly, IMO - I do not recognise "alt rock" as a category or sound as it is meaningless. Radiohead offer PLENTY to do with prog - as M@X and Rony have recognised. The fact that Mars Volta have a concept album with suites lasting up to half an hour does not automatically make them prog, or we'd be seeing LTJ Bukem in the archives...

In my opinion , the term "prog" doesn't mean anything, expecially in recent times. It's a term that works good with Genesis, ELP, Gentle Giant, Caravan........ but it stops there. Radiohead , anyway, were great with Ok Computer and Kid A, which I think was their best. Probably the greatest band of the nineties, they just had one bad point: they tended to express always the same feeling with their music. Sometimes songs resemble too much....... and well, Hail To the Thief is good but really not all that great..... |
