Have you listened to it yet?

Yes?

Do you like it?

Yes?

Then it was the right choice!!!!!!

No?

It's still the right choice, because if you don't like that Genesis album, you probably won't like any of them (at least in the Gabriel period), and now you know!

dont let other people tell you what to like.

I'd put YES's CttE as fractionally more essential to the annals of Progdom personally, but SEbtP is my personal favourite GENESIS record (apart from the cover - horrible pic with disgusting cream surround!)

Never really like tubular bells, it's the voice introducing the instruments that narks me.

All of them are probably "essential" (another thread today....) but SEbtP is as good a start as any, more accessible than Close to the Edge even if possibly........[that's enough Yes v Genesis -Ed]

Anyways. You made the right choice!
SEBTP is IMO the best of them, and the most accesible=the best to begin with of the four.

CTTE and Foxtrot are both brilliant. Tubular Bells I only remember that I've listened to it once, but I don't remember how it sounded.

I had quite forgotten about that annoying voice.....now how does it go? "Guitar...piano...double speed guitar...triangle....bath plug......aah, you're right it.drones on & on until "plus tubular bells!"

Who's voice is it - sounds too old for Oldfield?

Video Vertigo, I'd say you're on the right track, however.

What I've been doing is going for the most highly rated album by a particular artist if I've never heard 'em. That way, you'll pretty much know you're either going to like them, or not.

This site is such an amazing resource!!!

I would go for Foxtrot among the four. Much better than SEbtP.

As for CttE: that's my personal favorite, but shorter, and shows a more experimantal side of Yes. btw, I always prefer Yes over Genesis...

Mike Oldifield should come at a later stage for proggers

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

[QUOTE=Progger]I think you made the worse! SEBTP is poorly produced [like most early Genesis albums]

you gotta be kiddin'....if SEBTP is "poorly" produced, what would you say about Nursery Crime?

I think SEBTP is the better produced Hackett/Gabriel era Genesis' album, maybe even better than The Lamb...

video vertigo (good nickname)

sorry, I'd forgot the main subject

you've made a GOOD choice...SEBTP is a great album, even though I find it's brutally spoiled by "I know what I like" and the damn stupid "more fool me". The rest is great music, and it's a good starter. Next step could be Foxtrot and then Yes. I would suggest you to leave Mike Oldfield to a later moment.

bye,

porter

Well, I think you made a fine choice, Video Vertigo. I also started my Genesis collection with SEBTP and all I can say is, it was a good thing that I did! I was hooked on it for weeks, until I went and got Foxtrot next...and it was such a disappointment. Nursery Cryme did not improve on things and I was beginning to think that Genesis as a whole was not for me after all. Of course, as is in my nature, I didn't give up and kept on listening to the other two records, and now I do like Foxtrot quite a bit -still not that enthusiastic about Supper's Ready as a whole but hey, I know I am in a very small minority there!

And what's wrong with More Fool Me, it's a sweet song!

Anyway, get CttE next, as it is simply the best.

I was made to love magic

this isn't an introduction to prog for me, but a continuation of buying classic symphonic prog.  I have quite a selection of non classic symphonic prog in my collection.
So far Selling England By the Pound is just average, nothing special so far and Gabriel's voice is a little raspy for my taste.... But I have at least 10 listens to go before a make a good judgement, I will either be addicted to it or will never listen to it again or will still think its just average.  Like most prog music it should take some time to adjust to.

Why is there such a belief that early Marillion and early Genesis is so similar? I can't hear it, and Fish does NOT sound like Gabriel.  I have all Marillion's albums with Fish and now 1 Genesis album with Gabriel and don't hear the similarities

The one I got was Selling England By the Pound did I make the right choice?

It's my favourite of the lot ... if that's any consolation

all of them are worth buying. Personally I prefer Foxtrot out of these 4, then CTTE, then SEBTP and last is Tubular bells which is nice but not even close to the other 3.

Enjoy your new disk !

Yes, probably...

'Selling England by the pound' is a great album and it is probably the EASIEST to get into of all of the choices, CTTE might have put you off a bit! The title track is a hard nut to crack. The other two songs are much easier though. 'Tubular bells' requires REAL attention, and is alot to take in, since you really need to take all 50+ minutes in all at one time. 'Foxtrot' is one you should get to later also, since (although it is one of the best songs of all time) 'suppers ready', again is alot to swallow in one go...

I think you chose 'wisely'...now that sounds like a movie, eh?
