I am totally amazed!!! Any of you who know the music of this group would not on first hearing associate it with progressive rock music. I have always thought Leftfield to be sophisticated electronic dance/trance music.

As much as I love their music, I wonder if they should be included in the Archives. What are your thoughts on this??

I don't know them very well - but from what I heard, they don't belong here.

I'm glad I am not the only one who thinks they should not be in the archives. I would really like someone to give me some constructive reasons why Leftfield should be here?

Thanks Mike and TP for your comments

Yep - the modern day electronica scene has A LOT of interesting and progressive artists, and one might say Leftfield is one of them, but they're just so far from prog rock they have no place on this site at all.

We have a "progressive electronic" sub genre here on this site but IMO that should only be for the true electronic pioneers of the 70's , like TD, Schulze and Kraftwerk.

I agree - there are some brilliant advocates of modern day electronica. So far the Archives has "basically" ignored them. I believe that a new precedent is being set! Does this mean that groups like Faithless, The Chemical Brothers and GoldFrapp as well as individuals such as Paul Oakenfeld and Carl Cox all great exponents of this music genre, now qualify for PA?

I would like to know who approves the nomination and are the boundaries for acceptance into PA being discreetly expanded !!!

I personally think much IDM is prog in electronic drag (Orbital's In Sides, for
example), but I feel uncomfortable with the (admittedly magnificent)
Leftfield being here.

I agree with Trouserpress!

I don't think these are progressive. I posted some examples of modern electronic bands which I consider progressive (some borderline):

^ Mike - I was being flippant by naming those groups in my comments above. I don't think for one minute that they are "progressive" but I cannot see much difference between them and Leftfield - genre-wise. I have heard "Lamb" - I think they are brilliant but I will go listen to the others you have mentioned in your post and let you know what I think of their music style.

Thanks

^ The bands in the thread that I posted are IMO not enough prog to be listed in the archives, but they're very innovative and cleverly fuse electronic music with traditional music & instruments. Maybe someday, we'll have a category for such music on this website.

Isn't that exactly what Tangerine Dream do?

Sure - I was referring to modern bands (1990 and upwards). I feel that the bands which I posted in my thread are as clever as the pioneers from the 70's, but they're not labeled "Progressive Electronic" because that genre seems to be confined to the 70's.

This is where the sub-genre thing becomes "messy" - While your bands are indeed clever proponents of electronica there is something which separates them from the pioneers of the 70's. Time seems to be the issue not technique. But then instrumentation and production is far more sophisticated now. Strangely enough I think the 70's pioneers sound just a good today as they did back then.

^I agree - the bands I listed belong somewhere else. Maybe a genre "Modern Progressive Electronica". The word "modern" in this context means that the music was created in a time where electronic music is commonplace. In the 70's, electronic music was something new - today it is nothing unusual. But the bands that I listed really test the boundaries of electronic music, AND combine it with traditional approaches. So in a way, they're similar to the 70's pioneers, but from an entirely different perspective.

^ I like your idea of "Modern Progressive Electronica" that would IMO justify your bands and those similar to Leftfield being included in PA. Well...not only justify but give them a place historically within the progressive music movement. We like to catagorize our music it makes it easier to identify different forms and techniques doesn't it ?

Dear god - are the admins trying to make us guess where they'll next throw this thread. First to Bands and Albums, now it's up here again. Decide, will you!

Leftfield's "Leftism" is a great album and one that I play (at high voume) regularly.

I would never dream of finding a review here though.

I too was pretty shocked to see Leftfield here ... but who can draw the line between Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk and Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre and some of the last decade's most progressive dance-music innovators ... Goldie did a one track 60 minute album ... I think ... perhaps he's next?

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."
