Tonight I was at Barnes & Noble with my dad, he offered to buy me 1 album of my choice and I wasn't about to buy another (didn't want a money management lecture) So I looked through the choices for classic early 70s prog and found 4 studio albums that I didnt have that I wanted  (Yeah thats about all)
The choices were Genesis- Selling England by the Pound and Foxtrot, Yes- CTTE, and Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield.
The one I got was Selling England By the Pound did I make the right choice?

Anyway, the one near my house does not, and honestly, I havent heard all of SEBTP, although I plan on getting soon, so I cant really say if you made the best choice.

it doesn't matter. you need to buy them all eventually to be a true prog fan. even if you end up hating them, you are required to own them.

I would have gotten Yes's Close to the Edge, and no one's required to like Genesis to be a true prog fan.  Who knows though it could end up being your absolute favorite, I just have an irrational disliking of Genesis.

I know I would have bought them all, and plan on it but I'm a poor college kid making a buck 25 over minimum. So I only buy about 2 or 3 cds a month.

The first three are essential, the fourth not (IMHO of course). SEBTP is probably the best starting point to discover Genesis, and has the advantage that it opens up the listener quickly - Foxtrot is an essential next buy for a Genesis collection. Close to the Edge is a little more difficult to get into, but also a fantastic album.

Video Vertigo, you made a fine choice. Then again, there was no way you
could lose with those choices. All are fine albums you'll definitely want to
add to your collection. I would suggest picking up CTTE next, followed by
Foxtrot, and round it off with Tubular Bells.

Ok, you made a fine choice. Arguably the Genesis best album ever.

Now remain in the path and buy Foxtrot.

Still alive...

Difficult to say, as tastes differ. You like prog metal, no? If so, I guess you did the right choice from your point of view. I like CtTE much more, but htat is another issue.

If you have a change, listen it at sometime, and make your own decision. I don't know about States, but at least here at Finland, you can find "Tubular Bells" and "CtTE" from bigger libraries! I found OLDFIELD is little boring...

I think you made the worse! SEBTP is poorly produced [like most early Genesis albums] and that album is not essential prog.It does have one, and only one great track called firth of Fith, the rest is average! Buy CTTE or Tubular Bells, you'll be happy you did!

You couldn't really lose with any of those. My favourite out of the lot is CTTE but SEBTP is brilliant (and longer, so you got more music for your money). The production is vastly improved over their previous effort and it's mile better than Tubular Bells.

You have made absolutely the right choice.

Firth of Fith was my first real prog experience with Genesis. Great album and not that heavy for your brain.

In my opinion your brain has to adjust to a certain level of progressive music. Close to the Edge is less easy to digest than Selling England, but after the biochemcial experience with Selling England and followed by the great album Foxtrot, your brain would be about ready for Close to the Edge.

The other way around could cause some serious brain distortion. As proof I refer to the post of Progger.

My brain is slowly adjusting to VDGG now.

good starting points for getting into prog, but don't stop there. there is a lot more to be found.

by the way: when I look at the top 100 of the archives I always get the impression people give their starting points the highest rating, for some reason, and automatically subtract one star from other albums of the same quality; it is the only explanation I have why certain albums are at the very top of the charts. I think everybody will agree with me that most of these albums are typical starting points for the journey into prog; but does that necessarily mean they are the very best? but, as the saying goes, "old loves die hard", and that's why they are up there.

this refers to some of the albums at the very top only, by the way; there are a lot up there that rightly deserve this place

My local Barnes and Noble is where I get all me GG albums, it is loaded with rarities...

Saying that, you made the right choice with SEBTP.

Re: SEBTP.  I believe Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme, Lamb Lies Down, even Trespass are more interesting musically.

I can't believe I'm the first one that's going to say this...

Have you listened to it yet?

Yes?

Do you like it?

Yes?

Then it was the right choice!!!!!!

No?

It's still the right choice, because if you don't like that Genesis album, you probably won't like any of them (at least in the Gabriel period), and now you know!
