Genesis I guess Marillion lost a lot with Hogarth, they became a
completely diferent band - they should have changed their name, at least
you wouldnt except things to be the same, while Genesis was the same
band with a sound that progressed (not that good progression) ... Yeah
Genesis

Never forget Marillion would never have existed without Genesis. Actually the first times I heard Marillion I thought it was a new group led by Peter Gabriel, which accounted for the almost Genesis rip-off quality of the first Marillion records (even more so Grendel or Market Square Heroes in the previous EPs) and the weird cover up name the vocalist had (Fish). It was good to have a Genesis ver. 2.0 as I missed them in the 80's. I always had quite a laugh when reading how much it irritated the Fish-version of Marillion to be compared to Genesis, I mean how the heck could they deny it!? Listeners all over the world aren't stupid. I still enjoy Marillion up till today, great material.

I have to say, that if it's late Genesis vs. early Marillion, early Marillion is the winner hands down.  I love Duke, like Abacab, love the first side of Shapes, like Domino off of IT, and like DTLS and Fading Lights off of WCD; I did really like Calling All Stations, even if it did sound like a cross between Bankstatement and Mike and the Mechanics.  On the other hand, I love Script and Fugazi, and CAS ranks as one of my favorite all-time albums.  MC was o.k.  I liked some parts of it.  And Hogarth-era Marillion was good too up through TSE.  Overall, I would say that Marillion was producing far superior work in the 80's than Genesis.  Of course, early Genesis vs. early Marillion would be a whole different ballgame.

My vote goes to Marillion.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?
