Most of the songs i have heard by Maiden have Bruce on vocals and his voice is so childish as are the lyrics, songs like run to the hills, the evil that men do, bring your daughter to the slaughter. I fail to see why they are a good metal band because i can never take them seriously, they just pomp around on stage with giant eddies and pyro and all that crap and the music sounds so immature.
Can anyone recommend me some really seriously crafted songs by this band (if there are any), even the recent dance of death was disapointing to me, and mostly the number of the beast, which is meant to be their best album, sounds like a complete doddle. |
Frenchie, Iron Maiden are supposed to sound that way. That's one of the main reasons they're so good. If you take these guys (and a lot of metal, prog and some other genres) seriously, you'll never get any pleasure out of them. Not that there's much wrong with taking music seriously, but the key to Iron Maiden and many similar bands (although doubtlessly talented) is good-natured laughter. For me at least, DT are not really an exception here. Although I don't approach them with the same level of warm-hearted irony as IM, I find myself unable to take them seriously and still enjoy them. To me both bands are just very good fun - and I'm more than certain it takes plenty of talent and hard work for a band to be "just very good fun".
Here's my top five, maybe you'll find these songs crafty:
1. The Nomad
2. Judas Be My Guide
3. Blood Brothers
4. Can I Play With Madness
5. No More Lies

uh oh, looks like i will never be able to enjoy maiden if this is true, i cant stand the way that they seem to be taking the piss with all their over the top stage shows and stupid lyrics, vocals and riffs. I prefer my songs to be serious and meaningful, which i find in bands like metallica and DT cos they write about real things and rarely joke around, if Iron Maiden always joke around then i am not going to like them at all. |
now I've made IM sound like a bunch of jokers (well...); the cheese aside, they do put a lot of effort into their music and this effort is definitely there to be heard. Besided, Bruce Dickinson is one helluva singer, I can even remember him covering some Led Zep material very successfully (though can't remember which song it was and which album it was on), and that really says something.

But the main problem is that I like Iron Maiden, but I dislike DT's music, so my opinion is as subjective as the one from DT fans.

I'm sorry but Labrie is easily one of the best Rock vocalists ever, but of course if you don't like how "cheesy and whiney" his voice then go ahead, I'm not going to care much.

Hey King of Loss, I don't say LaBrie is bad, he's ok foor a metal band, but obviously he's not in the level of Myung who in this moments is one of the best bass players I ever seen and Portnoy who also is among the best.
But I still can't find any logical structure in DT as I don't find in Bboom or Thrakk by King Crimson, and it's a shame, because most of the members of the band are very talented, sometimes making more melodies and trying the easy way instead of showing off is much better.

Well, its up to taste, but I do find their last two albums "kinda lacking" Very good- great albums overall, but the songs themselves aren't that spectular, maybe Octavarium can return to the IMO "logical structures of an album like IAW or Awake".

+1
I just listened to Ayreon's "The Human Equation". LaBrie is amazing,
IMO a lot better than during the 2 last DT records. People dissing him
just need to listen to him also when outside his DT environment. And
his last solo album...

Steve Harris, the bassist and primary songwriter for Iron Maiden, is heavily influenced by prog rock acts... they even do a GREAT cover of Jethro Tull's "Cross Eyed Mary" that rivals the original.
Anyway, Maiden are the band that saved me from listening to radio. For those that can't see progressive influence in their music I point them to their mid 80s albums...
PIECE OF MIND is the first album with outright prog influences... a lot of lengthy instrumental sections, very melodic, and symphonic-structured songs. "Revelations" is a song with various non-repeating movements.
POWERSLAVE pushes a little closer towards a progressive sound... The second half of the album is dominated by lengthy suites with an emphasis again on complex instrumental passages.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME incorperated synths into their music, which was a disaster for most rock bands but Maiden was able to do it without compromising their original sound, unlike traditional progressive bands like Yes.
SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON is their proggiest release... a sparkling concept album. If anyone listens to this album and doubts a progressive influence, they simply aren't listening enough. A masterpiece.
Great band... definitely in my top 5, and they put on a great live show.

I suspect had "Rime Of the Ancient Mariner" been one of the choices, it would have been among the leaders. Superb track.

Rhime Of The Ancient Mariner,
Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Number Of The Beast
Run To The Hills
Alexander The Great
So many great songs. not prog though, but close enough to deserve some mention on a progressive site.

As a big metalhead, I'm always expected to love Maiden...but I can't
get past the boring overuse of aolian and the cheesy dull melodies.
It's all been done better by Blind Guardian.

The 1st Iron Maiden album is the only one you need to own after that the band went downhill.

I must agree with one of your earlier posts, comparing Relayer to 7th son,cos jon anderson can't sing Heavy Metal either.
