I discovered this yesterday, and thought the VST folks might be interested. Sorry if this has been posted before.

http://www.emsrehberg.de/SYNTHI__s/SYNTHI_Avs_plugin/synthi_ avs_plugin.html

I downloaded the demo, but as I am going to get Cubase SE this weekend (so as to get the G-media M-tron), I have no way to play it yet. If anyone gets the demo and uses it, please post your thoughts.

Thanks,

radiognome3

Well, I know one is an EMS Synthi AKS (same as the item linked above, but with an accompanying sequencer). There is also a Minimoog, which is the classic ELP type synth sounds (the quick filter sweeps during the instrumental bridge and outro sections of 'Welcome to The Machine"), though Keith Emerson is most famous for using a Moog Modular system. The Minimoog is a 3 oscillator, simple, hard-patched, as it were, Modular - same sounds, just much fewer sound shaping capabilities.

Arturia makes both a Minimoog and Moog Modular soft synth. G-media makes a Minimoog, as well, though for copyright reasons is called Minimonsta.

I do not believe that Pink Floyd used an ARP 2600 (or the earlier version - 1500?), though they may have.

There's a plugin called Crazy Diamonds (where'd that name come from? ) that does the string synths very well. Not really suitable for the leads, though.

I'll have to check out the EMS plug-in. thanks for the info!

Huh, yeah, what is the name of the synth they used for the leads on Welcome To The Machine?! I really like that Crazy Diamonds synth though, so thanks for that link, it's got some awesome tones. Though Im looking for something more along the lines of what they use for the leads. Arturia's minimoog is pretty awesome as well though.

Do you mean the Sherwood Forest '75 CD? Yes I do know about it, but thanks all the same. The Live Floating Anarchy '91 looks to be excellent, as well.

And Ankaret, I am almost positive that the leads on Welcome to The Machine are a Minimoog. The Synthi AKS is not really designed for lead plaing, but it may be a Minimoog being processed through the Synthis filter, though it doesn't sound like that to me. Sounds like a Moog.

Ok radiognome, thanks a bunch, I will mess around with Arturia's moog some more to get something closer to that sound.

If it's any help, for the lead part try one sawtooth and one square (with the third one or the other) wave with a hint of VCO drift or not synched, and a little sawtooth LFO to mudulate the sawtooth VCO. I do not have a copy of that CD, but as I recall, it should be close. The rest is up to your playing ability, and/or how good you are with a pitch bender.

^ Thanks KE9! Minimoog it is.

I downloaded the EMS plug-in...it looks and sounds pretty good, but I couldn't really check it out on a track because it produces an annoying noise every 10 seconds or so...demo versions .

Now if I only had the real thing to do a side-by-side comparison! All I'd have to do is sell my car and find someone who is willing to let go of theirs...

Actually, I was toying around today and one of the lead patches on Cubase's A1 Synth came as close as I really wanted it to sounding like the synths on WTTM. Im still a noOb and don't know how to tweak the moog so Ill stick with this...Im not really sure what is meant by

Hi Ankaret:

With a Minimoog, try the following for the lead sound:

VCO1: Sawtooth or triangle wave
VCO2: Square wave
VCO3: Square or sawtooth/triangle wave(experiment) - you may not need to use the third oscillator (or the second for that matter if you can get the filter/resonance set to your liking)

Blend VCO 1, 2 and 3 with individual volume controls. For the LFO, experiment with the wave type, and add a little as needed. Adjusting the filter high(ish) and the resonance low(ish) to mid, and adjust the filter ADSR as needed. You will have to add a glissando or glide or set the parameters for gate on/off to avoid a seventies videogame-type gap between the monophonic signals (or early Depeche Mode sequences, if you will). Or, if the soft synth allows, set the pitch-wheel parameters to allow for a larger note compass, and use the pitch wheel to play the lead.

Karnevil9 added to the mix the ARP String Ensemble, which produced the string pad that the synth lead is played over.

Hope this is more understandable.

Cool, that helps a lot radiognome, was wondering if you could specifiy exactly how I get rid of that 70's videogame sound in Arturia's minimoog software?! Not sure exactly what you meant by glissando or setting the parameters for gate on/off, Im new to synths and especially in software form.

Hi Ankaret:

I have been looking at the Arturia and G-media Moogs, and in the control area where the pitch/mod wheels are located is a switch labelled 'Glide' (I think it is the top switch in the control area immediately to the left of the keyboard). Glide, or portomento (sic), allows a monophonic instrument to sound as if there is an immediate continuity between sounds (glissando is different but when delicately controlled creates a similar effect).

Using the Glide feature (which should be tweakable since this is a softsynth - meaning it should be capable of more than just on or off), you should be able to smoothly transition between notes. Adding a bit of decay to the oscillators (the same amount to each), may additionally help.

Since the Minimoog is a monophonic instrument, each time a key is depressed, a gate is switched on beginning the sending of a voltage unit - when it is released it goes off and the voltage stops. Thus VCO = Voltage Controlled Oscillator. Purists may argue that this is not true gating, but the concept is identical - an on/off signal is being sent/stopped.

how good are your soundcard and monitors? i was blown away by the power and warmth of my arturia moog modular...for a soft synth it is unbeatable, but yull never have the real thing unless you have the real thing....

just an update- last night I downloaded...uh, well, let's just call it a less limited demo ...and it's pretty close to the original sound as far as I can tell. The only negative point being that the EMS was a pretty basic synth to begin with, tone-wise, and the plug-in seems pretty pricey for what you get. If you have a decent knowledge of synthesis techniques you could probably get the same sounds (and even that pin/grid interface) from other sources. I'd say buy it only if you really want to have the 'authorized' EMS product.

EMS will manufacture you a 'VCS-3' eactly the same as the original with MIDI of course for around £1,400 stirling last time i knew.

Hey, if each of those are truly modular doe that mean if you had all three you could make one monster synth out of them?

WOW.

probably pointless, but just imagine it...
