So, if you want prog to be celebrated into the future, you will have to accept that artists like DreamTheater and RADIOHEAD!!! are pretty much where the genre is nowadays, especially from a younger listerners perspective.

Disagree. Prog influences will still exists, but not in the "prog metal" scene which is not prog at all, but in others genres, like jazz, fusion, or even mainstream (but not Radiohead ).
Virtually all bands which call themselves prog today are everything but prog...

I guess in a way I agree with KE9 (gasp) because I'm here mainly to explore the 60's/ 70's prog that I haven't discovered yet.

I'm not totally dismissing the stuff that came after- there's some bands that I really like- but the genre that I think of as 'progressive rock' is almost exclusively a creature of the 70's, and to me the most exciting (and/or 'progressive') music after that period was not directly related to the genre.

Undoubtably, I'm gonna talk about music other than prog in my posts, but I probably won't create a topic about any band that isn't directly related to prog in some way. I certainly wouldn't expect you lot to appreciate a bluegrass thread.

Damn, KE9...you just can't be happy, can you?

Here's how the rest of this discussion will go: I'll say Iron Maiden was one of the biggest inspirations for the prog metal genre, and you'll respond that prog metal isn't prog. Someone will get upset and the whole discussion will go down the tubes.

WELL IF ALL THESE SUB GENS ARE ACCEPTABLE EVEN THOUGH SOME T**T THOUGHT THEM UP.I WANT NOTHING OF IT.I WILL BRAND EARLY PROG INTO SOMETHING I CAN ASSOCIATE TO WITHOUT GETTING MIXED INTO THIS NEW CRAP.

The best answer we can give is to start threads that elevate the level of this forum! This must be done with people with a good prog background.

People with a good prog back ground!I think i've notice as many on here that im have trouble counting on my left hand

I'm with Karn on this one.

Oliver do you actually eat those ''Fly Agaric'' mushrooms in your Avatar or sit on them?

How would you define 'good prog background'?? Someone who only appreciates classic prog from the golden age? Or someone who is broadminded and accepting of the fact that all music genres evolve and diversify?

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Music is music and I like many different genres. BUT obviously this is a prog site so there is no point discussing non-prog bands as it maybe misleading to those looking for new discoveries

Yeah here here on 90's prog Snow Dog!!! Mars Volta as well as Oceansize and Cave In put me in the direction of finding out about Yes and Rush and these led too many other wonderful prog discoveries!

Once you've listened to prog you just can't stop!
