Damn, KE9...you just can't be happy, can you?

Here's how the rest of this discussion will go: I'll say Iron Maiden was one of the biggest inspirations for the prog metal genre, and you'll respond that prog metal isn't prog. Someone will get upset and the whole discussion will go down the tubes.

WELL IF ALL THESE SUB GENS ARE ACCEPTABLE EVEN THOUGH SOME T**T THOUGHT THEM UP.I WANT NOTHING OF IT.I WILL BRAND EARLY PROG INTO SOMETHING I CAN ASSOCIATE TO WITHOUT GETTING MIXED INTO THIS NEW CRAP.

Dude, do you enjoy ANY kind of music whatsoever that is outside of prog? I do say that some of the greatest music ever belongs into the prog genre, but is discussing something- *gasp* non-prog such a crime? This topic is blatantly arrogant and stuck up. Quit being such a purist and going on your "musical cleansing" crusades. If you don't like it- leave (like you said you would...).

By T**T , did you mean TWIT or TWAT?!!?!

HeeeeeeeM!! Soorry about that !!!

Subgenres are a bother can be useful in describing music especially on such a site! I do not see it causing MAJOR problems in  the Archives.

But I know what you mean about these polls about anything that is best of anything! I get sick of them but also ignore them! All newcomers have a tendency to do those , because they still ignore such a thread has been done some thousands of time.

The best answer we can give is to start threads that elevate the level of this forum! This must be done with people with a good prog background.

It depends. It's OK to discuss Miles Davies, Keith Jarret... for example but just let me remind you of the annoying Slipknot excess... Only trolls should be exterminated and they were successfully so far!

Van Halen, iron maiden or Metalicca are the antithesis of prog, so please don't even quote them here!

I'm with Karn on this one.

I reccomend that if you dont like discussions about prog metal or any sub genre then dont join in them. Leave them for those who do follow the subgenres. A lot of younger contributors like the prog metal scene. I dont, but I'm middle aged. So, if you want prog to be celebrated into the future, you will have to accept that artists like DreamTheater and RADIOHEAD!!! are pretty much where the genre is nowadays, especially from a younger listerners perspective.

Disagree. Prog influences will still exists, but not in the "prog metal" scene which is not prog at all, but in others genres, like jazz, fusion, or even mainstream (but not Radiohead ).
Virtually all bands which call themselves prog today are everything but prog...

I guess in a way I agree with KE9 (gasp) because I'm here mainly to explore the 60's/ 70's prog that I haven't discovered yet.

I'm not totally dismissing the stuff that came after- there's some bands that I really like- but the genre that I think of as 'progressive rock' is almost exclusively a creature of the 70's, and to me the most exciting (and/or 'progressive') music after that period was not directly related to the genre.

Undoubtably, I'm gonna talk about music other than prog in my posts, but I probably won't create a topic about any band that isn't directly related to prog in some way. I certainly wouldn't expect you lot to appreciate a bluegrass thread.

How would you define 'good prog background'?? Someone who only appreciates classic prog from the golden age? Or someone who is broadminded and accepting of the fact that all music genres evolve and diversify?

Music is music and I like many different genres. BUT obviously this is a prog site so there is no point discussing non-prog bands as it maybe misleading to those looking for new discoveries

heres an idea...for all those who have a problem with certain bands(might i mention prog bands whether you think radiohead is prog or not THEY ARE(mabey not as progressive as KC or whatever) If you dont like having these bands included then start your own page for your narrowminded audience...prog is a genre of  music and all music has influences on other genres. I remeber reading a forum not to long ago about why progers consider themselves superior, musically speaking, but for some reason i seem to find many of them naive and ignorant to anything but prog...your not a music fan if you cant except anything But prog. Bands that have had distinct influences on the progressive genre should get discussed on this forum eg. beatles, (even metallica influencing dream theater and the likes)

If you dont like expanding your knowledge on the general topic of music than perhpas dont read the forums that make you so upset...go write a song about it
