Close call between Foxtrot and Selling England...but I went with the latter due to the vastly improved sound quality.

Foxtrot, it has some heavier tracks.
I like guitars, y'know.

ARE YOU PEOPLE FOR REAL????
If you really are music or at least Genesis connoisseurs you
should vote unanimously for The Lamb... for chrissakes!!!
It's by far the Sargent Pepper's of the seventies ! and it set the
gap between Gabriel and the other other lame dudes (except
Hackett, of course). Genesis never ever did an album this
ambitious, cerebral and full of virtuosism like this one.
The Lamb was the obvious next step in the evolution of the
band but the egos sent it to hell. The previous albums of the
band sounds dated compared with The Lamb...
next to The Lamb...is Selling England , the onlyimperfection is
More fool Me , a sacharine flop that marked the difference
between gabriel genius and wit and the other guys..
And for the other three previous albums (tresspas, Nursery and
Foxtrot ) I consider them a trilogy, all of them equally good,
IMHO.

Ok Rael, that's your opinion, but I stay with Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme for several reasons:
- The first two Hackett & Gabriel albums have a more atmospheric sound that was mostly gone with SEBTP.
- Trespass, NC and Foxtrot are darker albums, had some kind of mystery that was lost after Foxtrot.
- By far the best lyrics are in Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme.
- SEBTP is too cheerful and friendly for my taste, not only More Fool Me (which is the worst track in Gabriel era) but I Know What I Like are too radio friendly for Genesis, this is not necessarily bad, but the songs are weak.
- The Lamb has an amazing concept, but the atmospheric guitar was almost lost, don't like the short songs format in this album and besides In the Cage and Back in NYC there are no masterpieces of the height of Musical Box, Fountain of Salmacis, Supper's Ready, Can Utility and the Coastliners, etc.
Last but more important, it's my taste and my choice, I Know what I Like and The Lamb is not my fav Genesis album.
My list:
- Nursery Cryme
- Foxtrot
- Trespass
- Live
- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
- Selling England by the Pound.
Iván
BTW: Even though Hackett and Gabriel are by large my favotrite Genesis musicians, the band could never exist without Tony Banks. They did their last two very good (even when inferior to ay Gabriel era) albums without Peter (ATOTT and W&W), they also did a great album like Trespass without Steve or Phil Collins, but without Tony, it would be simply impossible.

1. Selling England by the pound (I just skip More fool me)
2. The lamb
3. Foxtrot
4. Trespass
5. Nursery cryme
All solid five star albums, bound to be in my list of 50 best prog records. Together with A trick of the tail by the way.
Genesis live is good, but does not add much to the studio albums (in general I prefer studio albums anyway).
FGTR is an interesting peek into their formative years, but utterly disposable.

Foxtrot.
Always used to go for The Lamb, and regarded Foxtrot as a close second. Other way round now Foxtrot is a prog masterpiece, and not only the best Gabriel era album, but the best Genesis album overall IMO.

Voted Selling. Now, sorry to step aside, but I didn't want to start a new topic with my question.
I saw a DVD of Genesis live performances ('73 or so) which wasn't expensive and has a good selection of classic songs. I don't remember if it had any other title than 'Genesis Live' or something. It irritates me that as a compilation from 3 different concerts, it has some songs two or three times. But if some of you have seen it, please tell me if it's worth buying or is the sound (and visual) quality low. (It looked rather low-budget product...)

Where did you see that Matti???
As far as I'm aware the only footage of Genesis love from the old days is recording off Belgian TV in about 1973. This is supposed to be pretty good, but hard to track down. Be warned. If the DVD you saw was the 'Inside Genesis' DVD then dont bother, it's appalling, and consists of music critics and few members of Mostly Autumn going on about how great Genesis are - as if we need to be told - punctuated with a few crap clips with credits and copyright notices pasted over them.

In a market's music department (here in Finland). 'Inside Genesis' doesn't seem to be the same. I'll have a closer look at it - but knowing how crappy live-dvd's can be, I won't buy it yet.
Nice weekend to all, I must be going soon (I'm around only in my working time).

by heart : TRESPASS
by ears: SELLING...
by brain: LAMB
but cause I listen to my heart mostly, I vote for Trespass.
That was album which definitely made me better, hope.

Trespass ****1/2 Nursery Cryme ****1/2 Foxtrot ****1/2 Selling England By The Pound **** The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway **1/2 From Genesis To Revelation *
I like Trespass the most, Foxtrot, Selling England and Nursery Cryme I like very much too, the rest of Genesis is not worth a mention.

I think The lamb is their best work. Selling England by the pound is very close, but you have to consider the range and scope of the former. This is Gabriel's crowning glory demonstrating his ability to create insteresting stories and adapting them to music.

Tough choices, so I'll limit it to the amount of playtime each one gets
1.) Foxtrot - Supper's Ready is simply a masterpiece, and this is
probably Genesis' most consistent album, with only 'Time Table' not
reaching the moniker of "amazing!"
2.) The Lamb - Some weaker tracks and more uneven, but the story/lyrics/scope of the whole thing is phenomenal
3.) Selling England - Some of their best tracks easily, but a few
filler-ish stuff I don't care for too much (After the Ordeal, More Fool
Me)
4.) Nursery Cryme - Not much her eother than The Musical Box and
Hogweed, though both are awesome songs. Harold's pretty fun too
5.) Trespass - Good, earlier stuff, nothing really stand-outish, other than 'Knife'
6.) Live - Nice versions but not too essential if you've already got the original songs
7.) FGTR - Haven't heard it yet, but from what I hear I doubt it will change it's place here
