Quote Oy vey, what do we have here?? Someone asking a simple question with a reasonable stake at hand, and the people go ballistic!

A reasonable question would have been to ask if Dream Theater is a great band, I'm sure there would be many more votes in favour of them.

But asking if they are (Or will ever be) the greatest prog' and ever!!!!! is unreasonable and closer to Sci Fi than to reality.

Ok, ok, but you know what ? MOST OF THESE BANDS ARE f**kING DEAD !!!! Of course they made some of the best music ever to be created by human beings (especially Floyd and Genesis), I love them, but, the guys that formed these bands are like around 60 years old !!! in 25 years, it's hard to admit but they'll be 6 feet under !!! And what, you want to be looking at the past, for the rest of your days ?! come on, move on, admit that these bands are dead, and stop being so NEGATIVE about bands that aren't 30 years old !!! Look at the future, instead of whining about the past !!!!

Bands like DT, PoS, Opeth, Porcupine Tree etc.. ARE the future of prog (and prog metal). face it. If you like them, fine. If you don't like them, or dont WANT to like them, because you dont want to "betray the prog gods of the seventies", well, stay dumb and close-minded.

Flame me to death now, I don't f**king care about it.  I'm just tired of most members around here, for whom everything after 1979 is pure sh*t. And, they often have the pretention of judging, killing a band, without having listened to it.

EDIT: and please, stop comparing DT with older bands. Look, someone starts a thread about DT, and all of you start talking about how good the classib bands are etc.....
We are talking about DT, not about DT VERSUS 70's prog.

+1 for Deadwing's post. At least someone in here can write a rational statement.

amen!

there will be no one greatest. YES, Crimso and Genesis hold the throne. Maybe they will be the greatest neoprog outfit, maybe not. Ever heard a Ayreon album? I don't hear much difference in complexity and beauty.

Some bands are out there all alone, some bands just know how to deliver a decent musical trick. No offence, they are truly great. Not the greatest, and never the greatest.

The Beatles for sure will be around for time immemorial. Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull and King Crimson because they created a music revolution. The Beatles because they started the whole thing back in the 60's. Their influence on preceding styles of pop/rock music of most genres is undeniable

Dream Theater are probably doing more for Prog right now then any other band at the moment. You can all deny it as much as you want, but how many (ie. me) got into Prog thanks to Dream Theater?

Thanks to Dream Theater, I'm now into Yes, Savatage, Mike Oldfield, Marillion, Van Der Graff Generator, Queensryche and many more.

Dream Theater are NOWHERE NEAR becoming the greatest prog band in my opinion!

Whilst I do like their music, it isn't as memorable as any of the greats of prog; in fact, despite me being a mere 17, I much prefer older prog music (as I imagine many board members are) to any modern prog band out there.

I have to say, the same applies to heavy metal and rock in general for myself.

Unusually I agree-they are a heavy metal band with Prog sensibilities.Prog metal does not exist.Playing endless hevy metal riffs in different time signatures and throwing in keyboard rambles and the occasional orchestration, does not make you a Prog Rock band!Confused
I can listen to SDOIT,but some of the arrangements are laughable.

I thought that the prog community was made of intelligent, rational, open-minded people. Thanks to some guys here, they all proved me wrong. You talk sh*t about everything that's not prog and that is not from the 70s. congrats people, you've just proved your stupidity and ignorance.

Many many so-called progheads make themselves an immense joy of dissing with occasional animosity DT, and also other prog bands from the 90s. Why so ? Are you jealous of their success in the prog world ? any other reason ?

As someone else said, if I wasn't into DT, I wouldnt' be AT ALL into prog. DT got me into : Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Neal Morse, PoS, Porcupine Tree, Queensr˙che, OSI, LTE, Transatlantic, Planet X, Meshuggah....

Your forgetting we all have different opinions. THAT is ignorance.

To me, Dream Theater is the greatest band ever. Not just prog, but everything.

But hey, that's just my opinion. I don't really care whether you agree or not, because that's how I feel.

Well, I cited some other bands, and there are more. I didn't "stop" with DT. DT conducted me into other genres and bands. What you say has no sense.

Quote all DT fans who think DT IS the greatest proved stupidity and ignorance...

and what if....that's our f*cking opinion ? Even after having listened to many other bands ? Is there a rule, "DT fans are not allowed to think that their favorite band is the best" ?

I don't know you well enough, but, what if I said, "all Pink Floyd fans(apparently that's your case) who think PF IS the greatest proved stupidity and ignorance..." ?

  1. So called progheads? Well, most of us been following the genre for 30 or more years, we've been unpopular, always minority but we been faithful, I think we earned the right to be called honest and faithful progheads, ,
  2. We've seen many other genres like Disco, Punk or New Wave appear and dissapear during all those years and will probably see other sub-genres and pseudo progressive bands vanish.
  3. Dissing 90's bands? I've not seen almost anybody dissing Anglagard, Par Lindh, Glass Hammer, The Red Masque, Fantomas, Porcupine Tree, etc. The problem is with Dream Theater, most of us believe it's highly overrated.
  4. Jealous of the success of the prog' world? Maybe Dream Theater fans seem to be almost exclusive with their band, most of us love a determined band over all, but show respect for the rest of the bands and are happy to see the success of each and every one.

Good point RT, when somebody askedfor 10 favorite albums, most of the people in the forum answered with at least 6 or 7 different bands, but this a DT fan's list.

Dream Theater: When Dream And Day Unite
Dream Theater: Images And Words
Dream Theater: Awake
Dream Theater: A Change Of Seasons
Dream Theater: Falling Into Infinity
Dream Theater: Scenes From A Memory
Dream Theater: Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater: Train Of Thought
Savatage: Poets And Madmen
Mike Oldfield: Crises

8 albums by DT, one by another Prog Metal band and only one by a 100% prog artist, don't anybody believe this like too much  for a PROGRESSIVE ROCK PAGE?

But everyone is entitled to his own taste, that's why the "close minded" (being sarcastic) moderators don't say a word when lists like that are included in a page designed for Progressive Rock.
