I thought that the prog community was made of intelligent, rational, open-minded people. Thanks to some guys here, they all proved me wrong. You talk sh*t about everything that's not prog and that is not from the 70s. congrats people, you've just proved your stupidity and ignorance.
Many many so-called progheads make themselves an immense joy of dissing with occasional animosity DT, and also other prog bands from the 90s. Why so ? Are you jealous of their success in the prog world ? any other reason ?

As someone else said, if I wasn't into DT, I wouldnt' be AT ALL into prog. DT got me into : Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Neal Morse, PoS, Porcupine Tree, Queensr˙che, OSI, LTE, Transatlantic, Planet X, Meshuggah....

all DT fans who think DT IS the greatest proved stupidity and ignorance.. JUST the progressive metalscene is so widespread.. Almost every DT fan begins and stops with DT.. maybe 2 or 3 more bands.. It's SO irritating to hear "uh dream theatre is tha best" well DT just isn't!

Unusually I agree-they are a heavy metal band with Prog sensibilities.Prog metal does not exist.Playing endless hevy metal riffs in different time signatures and throwing in keyboard rambles and the occasional orchestration, does not make you a Prog Rock band! I can listen to SDOIT,but some of the arrangements are laughable.

Dream Theater are NOWHERE NEAR becoming the greatest prog band in my opinion!
Whilst I do like their music, it isn't as memorable as any of the greats of prog; in fact, despite me being a mere 17, I much prefer older prog music (as I imagine many board members are) to any modern prog band out there.
I have to say, the same applies to heavy metal and rock in general for myself.

Dream Theater are probably doing more for Prog right now then any other band at the moment. You can all deny it as much as you want, but how many (ie. me) got into Prog thanks to Dream Theater?
Thanks to Dream Theater, I'm now into Yes, Savatage, Mike Oldfield, Marillion, Van Der Graff Generator, Queensryche and many more.

The Beatles for sure will be around for time immemorial. Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull and King Crimson because they created a music revolution. The Beatles because they started the whole thing back in the 60's. Their influence on preceding styles of pop/rock music of most genres is undeniable

there will be no one greatest. YES, Crimso and Genesis hold the throne. Maybe they will be the greatest neoprog outfit, maybe not. Ever heard a Ayreon album? I don't hear much difference in complexity and beauty.
Some bands are out there all alone, some bands just know how to deliver a decent musical trick. No offence, they are truly great. Not the greatest, and never the greatest.

Ok, ok, but you know what ? MOST OF THESE BANDS ARE f**kING DEAD !!!!
Of course they made some of the best music ever to be created by human
beings (especially Floyd and Genesis), I love them, but, the guys that
formed these bands are like around 60 years old !!! in 25 years, it's
hard to admit but they'll be 6 feet under !!! And what, you want to be
looking at the past, for the rest of your days ?! come on, move on,
admit that these bands are dead, and stop being so NEGATIVE about bands
that aren't 30 years old !!! Look at the future, instead of whining
about the past !!!!
Bands like DT, PoS, Opeth, Porcupine Tree etc.. ARE the future of prog (and prog metal).
face it. If you like them, fine. If you don't like them, or dont WANT
to like them, because you dont want to "betray the prog gods of the
seventies", well, stay dumb and close-minded.
Flame me to death now, I don't f**king care about it. I'm just
tired of most members around here, for whom everything after 1979 is
pure sh*t. And, they often have the pretention of judging, killing a
band, without having listened to it.
EDIT: and please, stop comparing DT with older bands. Look, someone
starts a thread about DT, and all of you start talking about how good
the classib bands are etc.....
We are talking about DT, not about DT VERSUS 70's prog.
+1 for Deadwing's post. At least someone in here can write a rational statement.
amen!

Oy vey, what do we have here?? Someone asking a simple question with a reasonable stake at hand, and the people go ballistic! |
A reasonable question would have been to ask if Dream Theater is a great band, I'm sure there would be many more votes in favour of them.
But asking if they are (Or will ever be) the greatest prog' and ever!!!!! is unreasonable and closer to Sci Fi than to reality.

First of all, we are not being asked if we love Dream Theater. I
already stated on another thread that Dream Theater is very polarizing
and you either love them or you hate them, usually for the same
reasons. I believe the question asked was if Dream Theater would be the
best progressive rock band ever.
Let's consider the facts:
Since 1992's Images and Words, which gained radio airply, singles,
music videos, and many, many fans, Dream Theater has consistently
pumped out high-caliber music for the masses to enjoy. 6 CDs have been
released since I&W, all critcally aclaimed by not just prog-heads,
but even by the general public. They have sold out shows across the
globe, continue to redefine their sound and their audience, and have
recently opened on tour with Yes, quite possibly the current bearer of
the title of the best prog band. With the "Gigantour" this summer,
Dream Theater will expand its image even farther into the realm of
"metal" all the while getting new fans and new appreciation.
Say what you will about Dream Theater's new direction (or whole
direction in the first place), their presence can't be denied: almost
every prog-metal band around now owes something to Dream Theater.
Already onto their 8th CD, they show no signs of stopping.
One thing I don't seem to understand is the way a lot of people diss
any type of modern prog, saying "nothing will ever compare to the
classics." This statement doesn't make much sense, because the only
seemingly reason these bands are "classic" are because they came first
and were commercially succesful enough to garner a following. Nowadays,
most bands refuse to cater to the masses, and the ones that do are seen
as sell-outs, giving up their talent to make money. And if a band
starts out succesfully mainstream (The Mars Volta, Radiohead), they are
bashed as not truly being prog for the simple fact that they are
succseful commercially...just like these so-called "classics!"
But that's an argument for another day. Dream Theater is NOT my
favorite band by all means, by they are currently one of the biggest
prog-rock bands at this time, there's no denying that. While I do admit
if they stay on their current nu-metal-ish path I will be gravely
dissapointed, I would't be surprised if Dream Theater became even
bigger and joined the ranks with the "classic bands" of the 70s. For my
money's worth, though....I already consider them modern classics

i also saw them open for yes, last september, in london ontario.. and yeah, it was freakin amazing (especially since i was in the third row ), but after a while it became just mud... high synth and low power chords.. an obnoxious singer who runs off stage in the middle of a song after he's done singing.. don't get me wrong.. the musicianship was astounding, but when yes came on, their sound was sooo much better.. so much more texture, much more pleasing to the ears.. not to mention that the metal heads standing in front of me left after DT was done what a rediculous poll.. |
Well they're hardly gonna put more effort into the sound of the support band are they?

Antisilence,
I really think you should listen to a lot more prog before
creating a ludicrous poll like this. Your love affair with DT
has obviously clouded your mind to the point of near-insanity. I
saw DT open for Yes and while I thought they were darn good, listening
to what followed really put their rather limited range of sound into
true perspective. Yes blew them away. |
Agree with a lot of the milder comments made here - AS you need to
expand your horizons and then give it 10 or 30 years. Come back in 2035
and tell us the same, expalin in detail why many other bands should not
have the title and I might go along with you .
What was that band in Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy who were so loud
, that they were forced to put their speakers and amps on a
neighbouring moon??? We could have something like that in
2035...........................................

All bands derive from other bands, ultimately all music can be traced back to some Ape deriving extreme joy from unabashedly smashing a log...
To add two bands to Dream Theater's influences:
Rush, Iron Maiden --> DT's first album, When Dream And Day Unite, sounds exactly like a Rush/Iron Maiden cross-over with many Metallica-influences...
