The Greatest ever

They're a great band for sure.........but its really hard to peg a band as the greatest ever, as there are so many different ways you can praise and bash bands

if anyone, i'd say Yes, King Crimson, ELP, or Pink Floyd, but even then you can't really pick one as they're so different.

I believe that if DT members don't learn that playing complex solos with almost no connection is not the best way to create a coherent composition, they will always be incapable to create well structured music.

We know each and every DT member (Except LaBrie who's voice I can't resist) are very skilled in their respective instruments and can do incredible solos, but that's the best I can say about them, IMO their compositions lack of structure (with a few exceptions),and  that's not enough to be a great band.

5 Virtuosi?

Maybe one true virtuoso (Jordan Rudess) + three very good musicians + a vocalist who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket live.

If it weren't for Rudess, DT would be just another heavy metal band by now - I consider they began to swing away from prog-rock when Sherinian left. He was the one whose use of keyboards really defined their pre-heavy metal sound.

Again - just my opinion.

King Crimson: best band forever - a provocative, but persuasive claim! King Crimson certainly win for consistency, inventiveness, integrity, influence and historical significance. HOWEVER, recent releases have begun to make me begin to question Fripp's (previously unerring) ability to remove the band from existence rather than release sub-standard material...

Although DT is one of my favorite bands, I cannot say that they are the best or on their way to be the best. I believe its hard to label any progressive rock band "the best" even King Crimson or Yes. I will say that they are the best in the Progressive Metal genre, but certainly not blowing bands such as Symphony X or Queensryche out of the water.

i also saw them open for yes, last september, in london ontario.. and yeah, it was freakin amazing (especially since i was in the third row ), but after a while it became just mud... high synth and low power chords.. an obnoxious singer who runs off stage in the middle of a song after he's done singing.. don't get me wrong.. the musicianship was astounding, but when yes came on, their sound was sooo much better.. so much more texture, much more pleasing to the ears..  not to mention that the metal heads standing in front of me left after DT was done

Agree with a lot of the milder comments made here - AS you need to expand your horizons and then give it 10 or 30 years. Come back in 2035 and tell us the same, expalin in detail why many other bands should not have the title and I might go along with you .

What was that band in Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy who were so loud , that they were forced to  put their speakers and amps on a neighbouring moon??? We could have something like that in 2035...........................................

Oy vey, what do we have here?? Someone asking a simple question with a reasonable stake at hand, and the people go ballistic!

First of all, we are not being asked if we love Dream Theater. I already stated on another thread that Dream Theater is very polarizing and you either love them or you hate them, usually for the same reasons. I believe the question asked was if Dream Theater would be the best progressive rock band ever.

Let's consider the facts:
Since 1992's Images and Words, which gained radio airply, singles, music videos, and many, many fans, Dream Theater has consistently pumped out high-caliber music for the masses to enjoy. 6 CDs have been released since I&W, all critcally aclaimed by not just prog-heads, but even by the general public. They have sold out shows across the globe, continue to redefine their sound and their audience, and have recently opened on tour with Yes, quite possibly the current bearer of the title of the best prog band. With the "Gigantour" this summer, Dream Theater will expand its image even farther into the realm of "metal" all the while getting new fans and new appreciation.

Say what you will about Dream Theater's new direction (or whole direction in the first place), their presence can't be denied: almost every prog-metal band around now owes something to Dream Theater. Already onto their 8th CD, they show no signs of stopping.

One thing I don't seem to understand is the way a lot of people diss any type of modern prog, saying "nothing will ever compare to the classics." This statement doesn't make much sense, because the only seemingly reason these bands are "classic" are because they came first and were commercially succesful enough to garner a following. Nowadays, most bands refuse to cater to the masses, and the ones that do are seen as sell-outs, giving up their talent to make money. And if a band starts out succesfully mainstream (The Mars Volta, Radiohead), they are bashed as not truly being prog for the simple fact that they are succseful commercially...just like these so-called "classics!"

But that's an argument for another day. Dream Theater is NOT my favorite band by all means, by they are currently one of the biggest prog-rock bands at this time, there's no denying that. While I do admit if they stay on their current nu-metal-ish path I will be gravely dissapointed, I would't be surprised if Dream Theater became even bigger and joined the ranks with the "classic bands" of the 70s. For my money's worth, though....I already consider them modern classics
