i am very surprised about falling into infinity, i thought it was a great album, kinda dull, but still amazing. Hollow years is just brilliant, lines in the sand, just let me breathe, and that opening riff on you not me! It's a great album.
WDADU, however, is a pile of sh*t, those vocals are sooooooo bad! I'm glad Labrie took over! He knows how to sing!

hm, either change of seasons - on some bootleg from '93 ('lost in the
sky') there's a fantastic version with the best vocals I EVER heard
from LaBrie, no matter if studio or live. when they released the song
on that studio EP I was completely disappointed what they made of it.
or just falling into infinity, heard it once and forgot it.
when dream and day unite... is brilliant, perfect, fantastic and was
revolutionary for the metal scene in the 80's and belongs to the three
- control and resistance/perfect symmetry/when dream and day unite. the
sound is hm, quite controversal but in a way I love esp. Myungs sound
on that record, it's fun!
yours,

I love the song "A Change of Seasons" and I believe that song alone beats out "Falling Into Infinity."
I don't know why "When Dreams & Day Unite" is being so disliked, I love that album.
"Falling Into Infinity" does have one of my fav DT songs on it ("Lines
in the Sand"), but doesn't really offer too much good material. In
fact, some of the material on the album is pretty boring.
I'm so glad I got to catch them live a year ago and they performed the
entirety of "A Change of Seasons", including the movie clip from Dead
Poet's Society, where the quote "Carpe Diem" had inspired Portnoy to
write the song.
P.S.
Frenche, I too like polls.
Peace & take care

And surely the worst album title in the history of rock. Ever.
Who are these people????
Sorry, from what I've heard of Dream Theater (got to be up there as one of the least beguiling bandnames too), they are simply unlistenable - torturously over-produced tripe with all the atmosphere of a rusting bansaw and the emotional prowess of tractor tyre with a breeze block in it.
|
This is a bit OTT..........Unless these two have no metal derivatives in their collection - if they have then I don't understand the antipathy....
|
Its not antipathy - its actual dislike.
But yes, I may have been a glass of red or two down the line when I drew those analogies, and perhaps they were a little inappropriate for a band that clearly has a decent following on this site. I just find them to be a bit too pretentious, or perhaps 'contrived' is a better word. Everything they do sounds so clinical and planned, and the metalised backing is just schmultz. It doesn't carry any real lyrical or musical power, because it appears that all the effort has gone into the production of a specific sound. I tend to equally abhor other bands of a similar vein, and will loudly decry Asia, Porcupine Tree, and in fact, most neo prog for the very same reasons. Its just not real music - its deliberately contrived to sound like it does, by a group of people (usually men) who have their hearts in a bygone era, and who only know the meaning of emotional expression through gated snare drums, digitally distorted guitars, and twee retro keyboard sounds. The "Jack In The Beanstalk-meets-JP Sartre-on holiday-with-Lionel Bart" lyrics dont help the cause either.
Anyway, enough of this. If I dont shut up, I'll have Ivan on here in a minute telling me I cant say 'contrived' because it has numerous legal and philosophical connotations that I can be sued ( ) for misrepresentation in a public arena.
By the way, I'm not sure what you mean by metal derivatives, but I do like Iron Maiden (more prog than DT ANY day), and am totally obsessed with ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. And PFM of course - they had a few attempts at dreadful soft pop metal in the 80s when Franz decided to give up the drum stool and sing

This is strange.
I voted for six degrees of inner turbulaence 'cuz it suks (to save time explaining why I don't dig it).
I like Falling into infinity. It has some of THEIR BEST CUTS.
Dream Theater is barely prog and it makes me sick they are in the archives.
Liquid Tension experiment is cool though I have a cool live video of them
Thank you for reading my honesly opinioned/Ignorant post. Have a great day slowly but painfully dieing to poor-man's rush/metal/yes.

Yes, the singer needs to get more involved in writing music and the drummer needs to stop writing lyrics.

Phillipe is right...I don't like his voice either.
Listen to "Pull me under" from "Once in a LIVEtime" and you'll laugh your ass off...
Nevertheless I like Dream Theater, not everything and not all the time but sometimes I need some of this stuff...and apart from LaBrie they're a great live band...
Worst album for me Train of Thought it shows that Dream theater is loosing more and more Prog ingredients...and they've not many...

Clinical and planned... as opposed to what? They have plenty of jazz improvisation moments in SFAM and that got complaints more than anything. The Evening With JP and JR album was almost completely improvised, and it sounded great. Their tone is perfect, but that's not ALL they have. You're making them out to be a superficial mainstream band. They play fast, but that's not ALL they can do. There are slow ballady songs in every album they`ve created. I'd say the speed mostly comes with the solos, and nothing much else.
Why don't you define real music for us then? These guys are exellent composers. Not showmen, composers. That's what they do. The electric guitars are just part of the mix. That doesn't mark it off from being "music".

Mind the double post, they're hours apart anyway.
Concerning the worst album, since I didn't have time to post about it earlier, I'd say WDADU is the weakest, though in no way a terrible album, especially by 80s music standards. FII would have to be their second weakest. It has a longer list of strong tracks, including Hell's Kitchen (of course), Hollow Years, New Millenium, Anna Lee.. and the others weren't bad either.
SFAM, being their most popular album I'd say, is the most critisized. Rightly so for the lyrics, but not much else. It was my first favorite album. Some very incredible songs, some unbalanced... I'd say the strong points on the album are present in specific moments in songs, as some parts seem to drag on.
Concerning James Labrie... It'd be nice if he didn't sing so high all the time, since he does have a pleasant voice otherwise. I guess they didn't want it to be drowned in the music... but Russel Allen pulls it off nicely.

I haven't heard a Dream Theater album I DID like. I won't say there isn't some talent in the band, I just don't care for it. Kinda like a really talented cheerleader with buck teeth. Ya really like to watch her, but you won't let her near your organ.

Images and Words is probably their best
Scenes from Memory comes close
Falling into Infinity is not that proggy, but that doesn't IMO make it a bad album
I like the heavier sound of ToT
I only have heard Change of Seasons once, so I don't know about it.
I haven't heard the first album at all.
Six Degrees is still a bit unknown to me, it's not great but it's not horrible either. Can't decide yet.
Awake is more proggy, but I still think it's quite bad. First I though it was great, but after few spins I changed my mind, only half of it was okay, the rest I didn't like. So I voted for Awake, probably against the opinion of many here.
Overal I give the band 3/5 stars. They are not my favorite, but I don't hate them either. I can surely see why people either love them or hate them though.
