It seems SW has been moving towards more electronic/alternative rock areas. For example his Covers album has a lot of electronic.
Even what he is choosing to mix for other bands is more on the electronic front. For example on Anathema's Distant Satellites he mixed/mastered "You're Not Alone" which is very alternative/hip hoppy/electronic pop. For those that like GFD/Lightbulb Sun style, we may have to wait for the restart of Porcupine Tree. On HCE, he is definitely more accessible styled music.

Don't know if anyone remembers, but during The Raven tour SW have played early versions of Happy Returns and Ancestral (at least in Poznań, Poland) both sounded fantastic to me. Also the new tracks are very good imho, this variety in moods helps to create some of the most emotional songs SW has written. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

^ Having now listened...
It's certainly better than songs 3 & 4...but it isn't home runs.

I haven;t listened yet, but I was hoping for more (than your description) out of the longer tracks. The two other tracks that have been released gave been bottom of the barrel stuff no doubt.

Fair, but I don't think he's ever quite had this level of singer-songwriter style in his music. Even while Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun had it, those albums were still strongly psychedelic in their nature. This sound very much like mature pop rock/alternative rock.

The first two tracks are streaming in a DPRP podcast. Skip to ~2:44 for the first song to start.
A solid 12 minutes of new music from him. It sound promising, but not amazing. He's definitely moving into the more accessible area of prog.

Insurgentes was his best solo album, IMHO, and The Incident is great too (I like it much more than Fear of a Blank Planet).
As for new stuff, Hand Cannot Erase is an okay pop track, too much Blackfield, the second track looks much more like a filler than a separate track. Neat trip-hop rhythms, I really liked those, but there's plainly not enough of song in this track. A very strange choice for promo video. Edited by ole-the-first - February 07 2015 at 04:49 |

I think the reason Insurgentes wasn't album of the year (certainly why it didn't rank higher) was because voting for it was split over two years - a lot of people voted for it the year the deluxe and digital releases were out, while others only voted for it the following year when the retail version was out. Needless to say, those who voted for the album in 2008 didn't vote again in 2009, hence the lower rank of that album on both years. Scores aren't available, but it was #6 in 2008 and #19 in 2009. The Incident was just disappointing, yeah.

£100? I would say yes but then I might be forced to vote 'tactically'

Well I've punted on the Blue Ray which seems reasonably priced. I did the same with Raven and then ended up buying the CD anyway!

*Shudders* Two swings and two misses thus far. Has definitely entered listen to before buy territory.

I'm tempted, even though I generally can't come up with that kind of dough, since Insurgentes and The Incident were controversial enough to not win their respective years, and this new one seems to be shaping up to join them in the vaulted #5 spot. I am tempted...

hah.
Book it. The OP missed it... he should have introduced the album as the future 'PA's top album of 2015' continuing a long tradition of S.W/P.T albums taking the top spot. I got a 100 bucks to anyone who thinks it DOESN'T win album of the year? any takers? Edited by micky - February 06 2015 at 16:31 |

Only based on one video/song, but it sounds like I'm outside the segment Mr. Wilson is aiming at this time.

I am glad its a departure on the one hand because I wouldn't want an inferior version of GFD or The Raven. I think this will be a solid release and really it would be difficult to maintain the levels of those albums which are both masterpieces in my book.

Still liking what I've heard. Different from what I'm used from Steven Wilson, but I like it just because of that. Still, I don't think I'll like it as much as The Raven, nor even Grace for Drowning, but I believe (hope) I will truly enjoy it. This songs sound like he could get some more mainstream success with some of this songs.
