Steven Wilson has been working for a while on his upcoming album and that isn't new but he recently released a new video on his youtube channel regarding this new album. In the video he talks about the influences of his new work. You can also listen to a preview of a few tracks. Steven Wilson's fourth solo album is scheduled for release in February 2015.

While it inevitably will end up as droopy and melancholic as everything else monsieur Wilson touches, I was still entertaining the idea of a shift in sound towards a warmer and more uplifting feel. I actually really dig that. Great riffs.

It is exactly what I thought about the up uplifting feel. This may not be the superb Raven album but it definitely sounds, so far, very very good.

That deep down inside Steve Wilson is a very sad puppy?
Nah but he's often spoken about finding beauty in heartache and melancholy. I guess that's why the cover arts to his albums always are so cheery.

I thought there were some really cheerful moments on that clip, which doesn't sound very much Wilson-like. I wonder if he will keep it up through the album... it would be really nice for a change.

I am curious about two things:

and
How many songs will be about women, dying violent deaths (I think it's 3 out of 6 on the Raven)

I am always pumped for anything Steven Wilson, can't imagine him topping The Raven though....Especially from the viewpoint of this site if he will have some poppy songs, he will get slammed.
I enjoy his Covers album, would not mind some of those songs with his full band.
The female vocals sound like Aleena Gibson.
I just hope he stops in Seattle for a show.

Yeah, I also find it difficult to think of him topping The Raven... but then again, I thought the same about him topping Grace for Drowning, and he did it, so, I guess we'll just have to wait and listen.

As much as I loved Grace and The Raven, if the new album ends up taking a different direction, I'll be okay with that. It would be tough to top the previous two albums, and it'll be refreshing to hear something new from Wilson.

Not much love for Insurgentes it appears? Surprising really. I find that to be excellent, especially as it was his solo debut. No Twilight Within The Courts of the Sun is surely one of his best ever songs.
All three of his albums are superb and I for one am pleased that he has concentrated on solo rather than PT which appears now to be consigned to history. Sounds like the new album will be a good one.

I like "No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun" a lot too, plus some other songs from Insurgentes, but it is not nearly as great as a whole album as his next two ones. And as far as PT, I think it's time is past and gone and the band already offered the best it could give; it had already started it's way downhill and I believe it was the right thing for Steven to put it aside in order to work on different things, which may not have been adequate for PT to do (plus, I believe I read someone on the band wasn't fond of the jazzy things Wilson wanted to try). Perhaps the time will come when it will be right to bring PT back.

i don't know ... maybe I'm getting old ... silence is nice and golden many times and "rock" music is getting very boring, specially when you hear someone/something like this.
And yes ... I want more PT, and less Steven Wilson! But I doubt his ego can handle that!

The psychedelic pop song of Insurgentes! One of my favorites too, especially from Insurgentes.
This new album... I bought the pre-order deluxe set of The Raven, one of my cherished possessions and well, I'm glad I'm broke this year Prog-pop can be done well, (a commentor on Youtube noted the similarities to Todd Rundgren in this new song (though I don't see the similarities...) ), this side of Steven Wilson I'm disappointed in.
At least he's trying something new, though. That was the downfall of Ziltoid 2. After Townsend trying a new style EACH album, Ziltoid 2 sounded like everything else he did before.
I guess it's a lose-lose scenario for Wilson

Still liking what I've heard. Different from what I'm used from Steven Wilson, but I like it just because of that. Still, I don't think I'll like it as much as The Raven, nor even Grace for Drowning, but I believe (hope) I will truly enjoy it. This songs sound like he could get some more mainstream success with some of this songs.

I am glad its a departure on the one hand because I wouldn't want an inferior version of GFD or The Raven. I think this will be a solid release and really it would be difficult to maintain the levels of those albums which are both masterpieces in my book.

I'm tempted, even though I generally can't come up with that kind of dough, since Insurgentes and The Incident were controversial enough to not win their respective years, and this new one seems to be shaping up to join them in the vaulted #5 spot.

I think the reason Insurgentes wasn't album of the year (certainly why it didn't rank higher) was because voting for it was split over two years - a lot of people voted for it the year the deluxe and digital releases were out, while others only voted for it the following year when the retail version was out. Needless to say, those who voted for the album in 2008 didn't vote again in 2009, hence the lower rank of that album on both years. Scores aren't available, but it was #6 in 2008 and #19 in 2009.
The Incident was just disappointing, yeah.

Insurgentes was his best solo album, IMHO, and The Incident is great too (I like it much more than Fear of a Blank Planet).
As for new stuff, Hand Cannot Erase is an okay pop track, too much Blackfield, the second track looks much more like a filler than a separate track. Neat trip-hop rhythms, I really liked those, but there's plainly not enough of song in this track. A very strange choice for promo video.

Fair, but I don't think he's ever quite had this level of singer-songwriter style in his music. Even while Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun had it, those albums were still strongly psychedelic in their nature. This sound very much like mature pop rock/alternative rock.

^ Having now listened...
It's certainly better than songs 3 & 4...but it isn't home runs.

Don't know if anyone remembers, but during The Raven tour SW have played early versions of Happy Returns and Ancestral (at least in Poznań, Poland) both sounded fantastic to me. Also the new tracks are very good imho, this variety in moods helps to create some of the most emotional songs SW has written. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

It seems SW has been moving towards more electronic/alternative rock areas. For example his Covers album has a lot of electronic.
Even what he is choosing to mix for other bands is more on the electronic front. For example on Anathema's Distant Satellites he mixed/mastered "You're Not Alone" which is very alternative/hip hoppy/electronic pop.
For those that like GFD/Lightbulb Sun style, we may have to wait for the restart of Porcupine Tree. On HCE, he is definitely more accessible styled music.
