Operation Mindcrime is a Melodic Metal / Hard Rock album and IMO not very progressive. It is brilliant though and it is very varied - every song is carefully crafted to reflect the storyline, most apparently in Suite Sister Mary, Empty Room, etc. It is not a good example of a (Symphonic) Prog album, but an outstanding Metal album (one of the top 10 metal concept albums in MOST books). |

Operation Mindcrime varied? I wouldn't say it was, partictularly (good record though, don't get me wrong!).

You don't know enough good (prog) metal then, because good metal albums are just as varied as good prog rock albums, ESPECIALLY the concept albums. I recommend you make a "leap of faith" and buy one of these albums and listen to it in its entirety:
You will notice that these bands are extremely good at adjusting their songs to the respective moods ... the vocals, the instrumentation ... everything. |

It doesn't have to be loud, or even agressive, to be "metal" - true, the vast majority of metal bands' music is more suited to negative emotions, but not always violence and destruction. It is also not uncommon for metal songs to have very quiet, reflective passages - even down to just an acoustic guitar for a few minutes. Metallica were doing this twenty years ago and there wasn't anything to do with a concept there. I'm sure you don't want to listen to an example ![]() ![]() Edited by goose |

you miss my point. if they don't sing about violence and destruction, then why the metal? it is the incongruency of lyrics and music that I dislike about most metal. with a band like VdGG you don't need to understand a word to get at least a vague impression of what the song is about; I seriously doubt this is possible with a metal band (unless they refrain from metal for a change) |

Before there was Tommy, the Who recorded a mini-opera called "A Quick
One" - it occupies half of side two of an album by the same name. I heard it performed live by the group on a revolving stage at the Sydney Stadium in 1967. As far as concept albums go, I favour Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play". Taa |

SF Sorrow by the Pretty Things. More psychedelic than prog. However still enjoyable and full of mellotron.

A few that I haven't seen mentioned yet, and which I'd recommend, are:
Tales Of Mystery & Imagination (The Alan Parsons Project) Claude Monet Vol. 1 1883-1889 (XII Alfonso) The Eye Of Wendor (Mandalaband) ...none of which are prog metal. |

WHAT?!?! you prefer THAT version to the film version?!?! very strange...I've listened to both and I undoubtedly prefer the film version: the singers are all in great shape, the re-done parts are way better (especially Pilate and Mary Magdalene), and Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson are amazing!!!! (maybe because besides being singers, they were also actors...and so they ACT WHILE SINGING!!!)... |

I'm sorry, but I would have to disagree with you. It's true that there are a lot of metal bands who sing exclusively about death, violence and destruction, but there are also a few who tackle more more 'intellectual' topics. Talking about concept albums, there are two great ones made by metal bands: namely, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden and of course the majestic Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche. The subject matter of both is not what you would call cheerful, nevertheless it has very little to do with gratuitous 'violence and destruction'. As to other concept albums I would recommend, obviously there's the Pink Floyd 'triple whammy' of Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, the two already mentioned by the Who and Thick as a Brick. |
