Toccata: rough on the ears and full of energy but at the same complex and neoclassical. Gotta love it.

I was looking for "Trilogy", I forgot about Greg Lake singing a bit on that one! Begs the question what consitutes an instrumental. For example, is Pink Floyd's "One of these days" an instrumental? Guess that's a whole new topic though.
Almost chose "Bolero", but went for "Fanfare".

I know what you mean Easy, I'dd class most ELP tracks as 'instrumental'. Nearly all Emerson written numbers are 'instrumental' whether or not there is a vocal element.
I too was looking for 'Trilogy' as I think this is probably the most developed track ELP ever did. I have studied the score many times and am always impressed by the development of the themes and their strength - probably my mosy favourite track (especially to play on piano).

The Barbarian, i love the piano interlude.

I forgot to mention, the piano interlude in The Barbarian is taken directly
from the piano piece by Béla Bartok. He neglected to credit it on the
original album, but did pay the rights to Bartok's descendants. I think
Keith turned a lot of people on to modern classical by putting these tunes
in a rock context. But he's a great composer himeself, that's why I voted
"Tank", it's pure Emerson.

TANK is the greatest clavinet song ever written, it's just so perfect for the
sound of the that instrument, that's why I prefer the original to the Works
version. Toccata is fantastic, but Keith didn't compose it, it's a great
orchestral piece by the South American composer Ginastera. Probably the
best timpani playing ever in a rock tune!

No, it was from Alberto Ginastera, wasn't it?
|
Yes it was, in his autobiogrpahy Keith Emerson describes how he visited
him and got him to put an endorsement of ELP's version on the cover of
BSS.

I voted The Barbarian. Still curious about Bartok's original (Allegro Barbaro)

Tank gotta love that drum solo in the middle. The clavicords rock pretty
good too. Overall great song with Toccata at an extremely close
second.

In the late 1970's, I heard Fanfare live and was absolutely blown away.
