I can't believe everybody is talking about if to do the poll or not. Of course there would be some who doesn't care about latin bands, so what? Every poll is like that, not everybody is interested.
Just do the poll. |

Good luck with paging through your bilingual dictionaries while listening to your music Most people will listen to instrumental music every once and a while,. But for some of us the bottom line is the musics got to say something psychological, political, about the human experience. That's the way it resonates. Even one line slogans of pop songs and the like, music is anchored by language. It can only be hoped people don't just listen for backing tracks. Someone should always seek out music that resonates with them using a language they understand. It is sad to think that people all over the world have to listen to English music. Some countries speak English well, and this isn't a problem. In other countries less versed in English, Western music became dance music with nonsense lyrics. This is too bad. For English speaking people, they are lucky to have so much poetry and moving songs to listen to. Music and message are one, and it is possible that a bad message can be made into something more by good music, or that a good message can be hurt by bad music, but one without the other is a waste and not the basis for repeated listening. |

As a matter of fact, even though my mother language is spanish, I really like pop, for example, much better in english than in spanish... I somehow feel it is more apropiate and sounds better with the kind of music. I guess a lot of it has to do with there being better quality pop singers in english than in spanish, but there is also a Roxette album they released with their hits all sung in spanish... and even though there were many songs I really liked a lot in their english versions, in spanish they sounded just like the same spanish pop crap. On the other hand, I have just about no problem with rock being sung in spanish... I guess it's harder edge sounds better with the language. Now, whenever I can find some prog I like on another language besides english, I am interested in giving it a chance, just for a change, and I do have found some really good songs/albums/artists; for me lyrics do are important, but if I don't understand them, well, too bad, I'll enjoy the music, and the special feel the other language gives the music. Though, I must admit I have much more prog, and music in general, sung in english than in any other language... mainly because of it's availability. However, even many bands from other european countries choose to sing in english rather than their mother toungue (surely because thus they'll get a broader audience), if I'm hearing a swedish band, I would rather hear them sing in swedish, if I'm hearing a German band, I'd rather hear them sing in german, etc. |

Funny thing: I don't speak Japanese, yet I listen to Japanese bands singing in Japanese.
I don't speak Arabian, yet I listen to Algerian, Morrocca, Lebanese musicians singing in Arabian. I don't speak German, yet I listen to German bands singing in German. Oh, silly me, I use bilingual dictionnaries. |

I can only understand English, straightforward enough? I think lyrics are important, and if its sung in another language I cannot understand. I can fathom that if some prog fans have no appreciation for lyrics in music, then they would have no problem with this, but not me. I don't think that's ethnocentric, just lyric-centric. |

Isn't this a bit ethnocentric of you? Are we now establishing English as superior to all foreign languages? I don't see how you not being able to understand the language affects the quality of the music in any way.

You are right, and I take that into account, but I also have experienced a severe drop off in prog quality in every non English country. Foreign Prog is usually made to lower standards, is derivative, has lyrics I can not understand, vocals I do not like, or runs down an alley I really can't dig. I myself don't really like so much the music from Mexico, and Latin America in general. The tipical latin music (Banda, Salsa, and whatever... perhaps even Mariachi) is really annoying and disturbing to me. And pop music in spanish is very bad too. However, there are a few rock bands who sing in spanish (not prog at all) who I like a lot. And some of the few prog I have been able to get in spanish is really good too, and I enjoy it just as much as I like it in english. Just, don't dismiss latin american prog just because you don't like the more mainstream music from the same area. It would be like dismissing Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Rush, etc, just because you don't like Britney Spears or Country music, or Rap music. |

Of course this is extremely obvious to me, but for non-latin americans, I fear there could be some confusion. Once there was a thread about South American prog, and certainly Mexico was "oficially" left out of the discussion (even if it was ocasionally mentioned because of the similarities with South America)... as a matter of fact, I had found it a bit "dissapointing" to have had that thread about South America and not Latin America, since Mexico is more related to the rest of Latin America than to North America. |

I would be interested, I only know a few latin american bands. From your last tournament I found alot of new bands which has slowly grown into some of my favorite bands.

I do not know a single Latin American prog group and couldn't care less.
I find Latin American music irritating, at least what I hear on the radio. Maybe Latin American Prog would be better? Although I've sampled other countries and liked some of their music, England is really the place where my best music resides. North America is second, but that's hardly a different musical community. I can think of a few German bands that have resonated.... That's about it I'm afraid. |

This is actually a really good point. Once the current rage of survivor polls dies out you'll probably get a more favorable response.

I suggest you first to make a poll, if it's ok to make a poll about polls!

Of course I wouldn't be leaving Mexico out. The idea is that the tournament focuses on the whole american continent except for the USA and Canada.
