ATTWT had some good moments, but a lot of it sounded like solo demos polished up to fill an album. Duke was a stronger effort overall, but that was the end of Genesis as a classic prog band - though I'm sure all the money they made in the 80s cushioned the blow for them!

I think this album is always underrated, and aside from Eleventh Earl of Mar and Unquiet Slumbers, it's better than Wind and Wuthering. It's the last good Genesis album, and everything that followed is crap, Duke included.

9. Say It's Alright Joe (4:19) - ONE OF THE THREE LOW POINTS

11. Follow You, Follow Me (3:59) - UNDERRATED - HAS A GREAT VIBE - I THINK IF GABRIEL SANG IT, IT WOULD GET MORE RESPECT. I MEAN, HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM SOLSBURY HILL?
OUTTAKES - THE DAY THE LIGHTS WENT OUT SHOULD HAVE REPLACED ONE OF THE CRAP SONGS. Maybe replace Many Too Many with Vancouver

I liked the album a lot, probobly better than Wind and Wuthering, that
one just didn't do it for me. I still think A trick of the Tail tops
it, but very good.

I think whether you take to an album or not can depend when you hear it, and what is going on in your life at the time. Many people criticise this album, and all the arguments against it are perfectly valid. For me personally, I took to it immediately partly because it was the most 'prog' Genesis I had heard at the time - believe it or not - I had no idea who Steve Hackett was, and much of the lyrics struck a chord with me, especially Burning Rope & Undertow. It was winter 1985, and I was going through some sh!t at the time. This album was an enormous comfort to me.
Partly for this reason my appraisal of it may not be objective, but if it's aim was make someone happy, then it worked on me!
BTW, I thought later on, that Rutherford tried to emulate Hackett in places on this album, and I think his guitar playing generally is very good.

I bought it on release. I though that hacketts absense may make the band "stronger" as it did when Gabriel left IMO. I was so wrong. As you say it depends when and why you bought it. A friend of mine only bought it a couple of years ago and he likes it a lot!
I don't hate it though, I don't hate any Genesis album.

I actually love this album, and think there's some very nice prog tunes in 'Burning Rope' and 'The Lady Lies', some lovely ballads in 'Snowbound', 'Many Too Many' and 'Undertow', plus an amazing solo on 'Follow You Follow Me'. This wasn't where the decline started for me- their 'decline' was with 'Duke' I feel, but I only see it as a decline in prog terms; their later stuff is mostly listenable and I enjoy songs like 'No Son Of Mine' and 'Driving The Last Spike'.

It is an odd album. There are some great tracks "Lady Lies", "Burnign Rope", and "Snowbound" and "Down and Out." But there are songs I hate like "Say its alright Joe" and "Follow You, Follow Me." But the fact that The Lady Lies is on it makes it a good album. The bass work on the song is ridiculously complicated especially toward the end and in the choruses. It rivals "Heart of the Sunrise " and "Gates of Delerium" in technical skill for basswork at least.

I think it's vastly underrated but to say I love it is a bit of a stretch ... I'm surprised though that so many Genesis fans like to see this as the end of Genesis ... certainly they were trying to make prog (with the exception of Follow You Follow Me) ... lots of very nice songs ... The Lady Lies, Burning Rope, Undertow, Scenes From A Night's Dream and Many Too Many off hand ... and many pleasing Tony Banks' moments ... sure Hackett is missed, but I still like it a lot ..

It's a good album, but it lacks the fire of the previous albums, unfortunately. Still good, but i prefer Duke!

Yeah its got some really strong songs: Down & Out, Burning Rope,
Deep in the Motherlode, and The Lady Lies. Everything else just seems
pretty good to me, a bit better than so-so, but just a bit. All and
all, I do break this one out from time to time, and I play every song
and do enjoy it.
