Okayyyyyyy, here is a shibbolet I guess: Genesis masterpiece (or is it?) And Then There were Three? Do you like it, of do you think it's the end of western civilisation in general, and good prog in particular, as we know it?
Me and some of my friends, we wondered that most of us became prog fans once we heard this album. So I voted the last option.

And Then There Were Three is new Genesis (obviously) and I prefer newer new Genesis to that. ... But it's not too bad.

It was after listening to this album that I decided Genesis were dead for me.

pretty good, suffers from mushy production
I Love Deep in the Motherlode (I'm an American History buff, so.....)
It gets stuck between 2 genesis greats, W&W and Duke.

This is a great poll.
Genesis was killed not by Hackett's departure, but rather by a weird paradigm shift that happened immediately after And Then Were Three...
Duke sucked. Duke sucked Donkey eggs. I mean, the single "Misunderstanding" HUMILIATED every Genesis fan (did you ever see the video? Hawaiian shirts in a covertible?).
So let's clear up some confusion here: a lot of long-time Genesis fans feel Genesis fell apart when Steve Hackett left the band prior to "And Then There Were Three."
This isn't true, and this album is very, very good, with great writing and production, and a progressive sound. Genesis' fall from grace was caused not by personnel changes, but rather by attitude changes immediately after this album.
This album is, in many ways, as good as its predecessor, "Wind and Wuthering." The album opens with a bang: "Down and Out" is pedal-to-the-metal prog, with huge organ riffs and wild time signatures. "Burning Rope" is a classic mini-epic with inspiring, if not slightly cliché, lyrics. "The Lady Lies" is a great effort at spinning a classic Genesis medieval tale. "Undertow" and "Snowbound" are pleasant ballads. Even the hit single "Follow You Follow Me", which cynics have criticized, has a very pleasant vibe (and is infinitely superior to Wind and Wurthering's awful ballad, "You Have Your Own Special Way.")
This is the last good Genesis album. And then there were none...

I love it! A real killer album!
Well, thats probably an exageration, but I do like it a lot. I fully understand why some fans hate it. There is a gulf of difference between WAW and ATTWT, the former being a prog rock album and the latter representing the start of the decline into commercialism.
However, I think there are some brilliant songs on there: Down & Out, Undertow, Burning Rope, Deep in the Motherlode, Say it's alright Joe, The Lady Lies the remaining three do let it down.

I hated it! The only song I liked on that album was Deep In The Motherlode. Steve Hackett's absense struck like a punch in the face. It's bad enough putting up with Collins ghastly voice which I find extremely annoying, but hardly any guitar? Unforgiveable!
This was the album that turned me off Genesis completely. I heard the following albums because a couple of my friends bought them, but I never liked Genesis from this album onwards. But when Ray Wilson joined I was so glad especially as he sounds like Gabriel. Mike's guitar playing had improved a lot as well, so Calling All Stations was good, but not as good as their 70's stuff.
If Genesis ever reformed, I hope it has the classic line-up with Gabriel & Hackett, with Collins doing what he does best - playing the drums! I see they DID get together to record a new version of the Carpet Crawlers 5 years ago and that sounded great!

Yeah its got some really strong songs: Down & Out, Burning Rope,
Deep in the Motherlode, and The Lady Lies. Everything else just seems
pretty good to me, a bit better than so-so, but just a bit. All and
all, I do break this one out from time to time, and I play every song
and do enjoy it.

It's a good album, but it lacks the fire of the previous albums, unfortunately. Still good, but i prefer Duke!

I think it's vastly underrated but to say I love it is a bit of a stretch ... I'm surprised though that so many Genesis fans like to see this as the end of Genesis ... certainly they were trying to make prog (with the exception of Follow You Follow Me) ... lots of very nice songs ... The Lady Lies, Burning Rope, Undertow, Scenes From A Night's Dream and Many Too Many off hand ... and many pleasing Tony Banks' moments ... sure Hackett is missed, but I still like it a lot ..

It is an odd album. There are some great tracks "Lady Lies", "Burnign Rope", and "Snowbound" and "Down and Out." But there are songs I hate like "Say its alright Joe" and "Follow You, Follow Me." But the fact that The Lady Lies is on it makes it a good album. The bass work on the song is ridiculously complicated especially toward the end and in the choruses. It rivals "Heart of the Sunrise " and "Gates of Delerium" in technical skill for basswork at least.

A major dissapointment when I bought it. Time hasn't really changed that for me. Some good songs, but they are all missing something. A bit of passion or Hackett "atmosphere" maybe. So I'm not keen on it!

I actually love this album, and think there's some very nice prog tunes in 'Burning Rope' and 'The Lady Lies', some lovely ballads in 'Snowbound', 'Many Too Many' and 'Undertow', plus an amazing solo on 'Follow You Follow Me'. This wasn't where the decline started for me- their 'decline' was with 'Duke' I feel, but I only see it as a decline in prog terms; their later stuff is mostly listenable and I enjoy songs like 'No Son Of Mine' and 'Driving The Last Spike'.

I think whether you take to an album or not can depend when you hear it, and what is going on in your life at the time. Many people criticise this album, and all the arguments against it are perfectly valid. For me personally, I took to it immediately partly because it was the most 'prog' Genesis I had heard at the time - believe it or not - I had no idea who Steve Hackett was, and much of the lyrics struck a chord with me, especially Burning Rope & Undertow. It was winter 1985, and I was going through some sh!t at the time. This album was an enormous comfort to me.
Partly for this reason my appraisal of it may not be objective, but if it's aim was make someone happy, then it worked on me!
BTW, I thought later on, that Rutherford tried to emulate Hackett in places on this album, and I think his guitar playing generally is very good.

I bought it on release. I though that hacketts absense may make the band "stronger" as it did when Gabriel left IMO. I was so wrong. As you say it depends when and why you bought it. A friend of mine only bought it a couple of years ago and he likes it a lot!
I don't hate it though, I don't hate any Genesis album.

one just didn't do it for me. I still think A trick of the Tail tops
it, but very good.

I think this album is always underrated, and aside from Eleventh Earl of Mar and Unquiet Slumbers, it's better than Wind and Wuthering. It's the last good Genesis album, and everything that followed is crap, Duke included.
Track by track:
1. Down And Out (5:24) AWESOME BALLS TO THE WALL ORGAN-DRIVEN PROG, WITH TRICKY TIME SIGNATURES 2. Undertow (4:45) - PLEASANT BALLAD IN GREAT GENESIS TRADITION 3. Ballad Of Big (4:48) - DUMB COWBOY SONG. DUMP IT.
4. Snowbound (4:28) - PLEASANT BALLAD IN GREAT GENESIS TRADITION 5. Burning Rope (7:09) - GREAT MINI EPIC 6. Deep In The Motherlode (5:12) - OVERRATED - DON'T EVER NEED TO HEAR AGAIN 7. Many Too Many (3:30) - PLEASANT BUT TOO POP 8. Scenes From A Nights Dream (3:29) - FUN WITH GREAT GUITARS AND LYRICS 9. Say It's Alright Joe (4:19) - ONE OF THE THREE LOW POINTS 10. The Lady Lies (6:04) - AWESOME PROG MINI-EPIC THAT TELLS A GREAT TALE 11. Follow You, Follow Me (3:59) - UNDERRATED - HAS A GREAT VIBE - I THINK IF GABRIEL SANG IT, IT WOULD GET MORE RESPECT. I MEAN, HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM SOLSBURY HILL?
OUTTAKES - THE DAY THE LIGHTS WENT OUT SHOULD HAVE REPLACED ONE OF THE CRAP SONGS. Maybe replace Many Too Many with Vancouver
So here's my new and improved version: Down and Out/Undertow/Burning Rope/Snowbound/The Lady Lies/Day the Lights Went Out/Scenes from a Night's Dream/Vancouver/Follow You Follow Me

ATTWT had some good moments, but a lot of it sounded like solo demos polished up to fill an album. Duke was a stronger effort overall, but that was the end of Genesis as a classic prog band - though I'm sure all the money they made in the 80s cushioned the blow for them!
