Scott Walkers' The Drift is THE DARKEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME. Seriously. It is truly nightmarish.

Igor Wakhewitch, Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Shub Niggurath, Penderecki... they're all pretty dark. It's hard to say which is the darkest album ever for me, though.

This album is very dark but somehow diffrently then Heresie or any other album I have heard. While most projects which sound dark are mostly about Hell,Plastic people of the Universe & Agon orchestra are working within a triangle Eart-Heaven and Hell.If you ask me,I can't explain my theory,it's just my feeling.Goosebumps were risen all over while listening this album today, unbeliavable experience. You must read lyrics from the booklet to undesrtand and to get into this music because it is not easy listening. You must like most albums mentioned above to be ready for this one!!!

Black Mass/Lucifer.....by Mort Garson is a special dark electronic album. It has never offically been released because some major criminal domestic record label is either not leasing the rights to an independently owned prog label or the Garson family (hope to God), is planning to release Mort's entire back catalog soon. .....For the last 2 decades there has been no sign of this recording ever being released on any label. That is a total disgrace when you think of all the electronic recordings that have been remasterd, rehashed, retrashed, bonus this, bonus that, re-recorded, slip case, digi-pack, Japanese gatefold, and this one is left in the dust? What a bunch of high on the hog a...holes we have running the business. Believe me....this one is truly a unique dark collection of recordings from the master Garson.

I don't know most of the candidates offered by others here so I can not judge. It is allways a problem to answer such a question. One needs to hear every album ever made (and that is impossible). I can claim that "Les morte von vite" and "The fall of the house of Usher" are not as dark as Heresie (and the same with every KC, VDGG and Magma album I heared and at least with the first 2 I heared quite a few).
So, my answer is : from what I heared, definitely yes !!!
Keep in mind that I did not use that type of grass you are talking about for the last 25 years.

I've heard a great deal about a band called Devil Doll, but the reviews I've read of their albums have given me the impression that they are among the darkest and scariest ever recorded.
As such, I've been too scared to give them a listen.
![]() As for albums I've heard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada and VdGG's Pawn Hearts take the cake.

The most impressionable dark record for me was..."In the Shadow Of the Sun" by Throbbing Gristle. Not the typical affair with T.G. except for the noise. The voices which are heard on the recording are chantings, bellowed chours, screams, and are all from a distance. Picture yourself sitting at the edge of an extremely huge open field which leads into wooded areas. As you sit you can hear the rites progress but, from a distance which creates more of an errie effect. Something I often experienced as a child. It will creep you out. The whole idea of sound distance instead of chants recorded up front like in Heresie creates something of a realization which is chilling.Throbbing Gristle are God awful. It's just this one record which I make personal reference to. If you ever get the chance to hear it, especially after getting high, you might consider drinking a bottle of Coke to give nervous energy. The pot (if it is quality weed), will force your physical energy to freeze....and you don't want that to happen when this cd is playing. You might want to stay half awake or alert to pursue something different for your day's activities. It's like getting high before you visit your buddy who is a resident at the local mental hospital. Something we thought was real cute and daring to do in the 70's. Once you've stepped out of your car and are on the grounds, you will wish to be alert and not high. The Throbbing Gristle title has the same effect. |

"The Fall of the House of Usher" by Peter Hammill in the 1999 version is extremely dark.
Also Offering's "A Fïïèh" album. Unfortunately I can't find sound examples for that. And "the soundtrrack to Roman Polanski''s "Macbeth" by the Third Ear Band. Here a few examples: Edited by BaldFriede - August 12 2010 at 09:29 |

If we're staying strictly within the territory of PA, then Heresie takes some beating. Shub Niggurath went into even darker places, especially on Testament, and there's a group improvisation by Renee Garber, Klaus Blasquiz, Jannick Top and Christian Vander - Sons - that definitely should not be listened to if you're under the influence. Then there's John Zorn's Moonchild albums, especially the fantastic Astronome, and Fantomas' Dielirium Cordia. Even so, I don't think anything on those albums quite out does La Faulx.
Unlike many of the other posters, I don't find Zeit to be particularly dark, and I often listen to it as I drift off to sleep.

The darkest album in the Rock genre? Maybe (and I've listened to Zeit.)
The darkest album ever? No.

I used to freak out to Negură Bunget's "Om" while being under the same... circumstances...
I Think Tangerine Dreams "Atem" does the job quite well, too. Especially "Wahn" gave me the creeps.

I agree. Penerecki's sixties-compositions might be the most terrifyingly dark music I know of. Probably because unlike UZ, its never about being dark. Still, I find Heresie (and Zeit) wonderfully dark as well. But not as eh... cathartic... Haven't heard any noise that's profoundly dark like Threnody, Dies Irae, De Natura Sonoris..., but I got to admit I'm neither an expert or the biggest fan of the genre. Its brutal at times, but most of the time I don't "believe" in it enough to feel its darkness. |

Black Sabbath, VdGG, King Crimson, Present, Magma... You can find A LOT of bands which are claimed to be the darkest bands and, therefore, the bands which have recorded "TEH DARKEST ALBUM EVAH".
UZ is not merry, but I could mention PIL's Second Edition, O-Type's Mommy (the sole album I have from this off-shoot of MX-80).... But, you see, sometimes, I feel very, very, very depressed when listening to some disco music. So, I'm probably not the most indicated person to talk about dark music! ![]() |
