A cassette deck and a tuner, way cool. An 8-track built in instead eh? Not only that but I see the cassette there had a counter. Note also the vu meter... I graduated to a used Dual turn table that was in a wood box. My cassette deck was a DBX unit (went through two). My receiver had a long life and survived a house fire (the Dual did not fortunately the LPs were at my college apartment), I think it was a Marantz or Technics . Don't remember the speaker model but they were big and heavy. None of that bass cube nonsense. The turntable in my pic had 4 speeds. I think mine may have had 3. It could play 33-1/3, 45, and 78. What in the hell is the fourth speed on that thing?

Mine was this style, but instead of cassette player mine had 8-track player/recorder....My father bought me a Superscope cassette deck as a "separate" component, and I thought I was all that dude!!
The system had 20" tall full range speakers and the turntable was fully automatic, with stackable vinyl spindle.
Unfortunately our house got broken into and all was stolen....with insurance money my father bought me a nicer setup with separate turntable, but still had 8-track deck!! It was cool had the dbl VU meters and one Tape In.

^ Nice slarti! I think this one is way before "vintage" audio gear! I'll have to search for a pic of mine, if I can remember what it looked like

I suppose if you run your computer thru a DAC connected to your hi-fi system it can sound pretty damn good, I have demo some of that, but I have no interest in connecting my computer to my stereo.

Aww man, it was the best. I'm still trying to run down a pic because I don't remember the model. Not really hi-fi but...

I would never play the music on a computer though as the sound quality is so terrible! either listen on the iPod with high quality noise cancelling headphones or connect the iPod to the home theater system and listen through proper speakers. Usually though I'll play the CD's or DVD-a's on the home system and connect the iPod in the Car. |
Agree.....for me swap out iTunes and insert Zune. Listening to music on a computer is a throwback to the old AM radio hand held days.....

Well I never listened to music on one of those things. I did have a decent mono AM/FM radio when I was a kid. My next device was a portable record player with speakers unit. It was pretty cool. I listened to my first prog music on the thing. In fact I was using it regularly when I first got into prog.

Primarily MOC or cmus (depending on what I can get to build on whatever Unixy system I'm using). Foobar on Winders! MOC is great for SSHing into a computer in another room of the house and startling the occupants with some suitably obnoxious 80s pop.

Yup. I really love foobar. It's so damn light and customizable.
I have the iPod plugin so I don't need iTunes anymore.
Speaking of that, what's the best music player for Linux? I don't really like using VLC to play music.

MOC.

Winamp plays most types of file, but I do not like the layout. Windows Media Player is well laid out, but there are files it will not play. Although I have used Media Monkey for some time and it will convert files, I still find it a bit confusing and itunes is not intuitive to me. So, I'll give this a try.

I had a Creative Zen, then a Toshiba Gigabeat, and now a Zune. The other two croaked on me. I mainly use the Zune player software for putting together playlists.
