No no, my comment was regarding your second sentence, about the nuances and such.

I think Porcupine Tree and The Mars Volta are both prog, because structurally they both have the multi-part songs and the other blah-dee-dah with a sort of, I guess, "tone" that makes people call them alt. rock. Does that work for anyone?

And how's this, when someone says they don't like TMV for being too "alt. rock", but they like PT, it basically means they don't like the particular way in which TMV sound alty, and same goes for vice versa. *exhales

Ok then, I'm glad we had this... little talk.

The Mars Volta also strikes me as more Prog than modern Porcupine Tree.

Er, uh, oops...this was a popularity contest, not a "who's most alternative." Hell, I wouldn't even know how to define that. I don't know what alternative sounds like. NO ONE knows what alternative sounds like. We just know what it doesn't sound like, and dump everyone who's left into the great, empty vaccuum of "alt," hoping that they find their respective ways home someday.

Honestly, do Radiohead and The Decemberists sound anything alike?

Well, I don't like The Mars Volta, and it mainly stems from the fact that I feel like they are an alternative/hard rock band, not a prog band...
And Porcupine Tree are? The nuances of these things are fascinating.

Despite the mars volta being an alt/hard rock group I some how still voted for them as the best on the list.

wow, that's bad

It ain't good, the crazy b*****ds.I always said the reason they got better as they went on is because they started SO LOW, it couldn't be helped. Still, I haven't heard the latest one yet. Maybe I'd actually find something to like.

I'll excuse your unfortunate stance on this matter simply because you put Deerhoof in this poll. They are quite a cool band, and not widely known or mentioned around here.

This is some of the most stupid reasoning I have ever heard/read.

Have to hear more of the Decemberists. They may be as interesting as Porcupine Tree.

I know you're entitled to your opinion, but I really can't get around the idea of disliking a band because they're not prog. TMV may not be to everyone's taste, but this is the first time I've heard someone doesn't like them because they are 'alternative-hard rock'.

Anyway, for once I'd like someone to actually DESCRIBE what the difference between those two 'genres' is... Probably I'm stupid, but I can't for the life of me understand why PT are prog and TMV are not - in my very humble opinion, it is the opposite, but then, what do I know?

Porcupine Tree has always done a good job of staying progressive, some of these others have delved too deep into alt-rock. PT for me!

If Tool was on this list it would have got my vote. Now it's Porcupine Tree slightly over Radiohead.

Okay, fair cop. I would personally say that they are a prog band, since they use unconventional and long song structures, but I would also say that they are pretty terrible. Maybe not should-be-dragged-to-an-open-field-and-shot-before-they-infect-someone-else terrible, but surely I-would-rather-visit-my-grandparents-than-listen-to-most-Mars-Volta-songs terrible.

Even I haven't said anything as bad as that in a review. Way to go the W LOL
