Topic: What year did you first hear Dream Theater ? Posted: July 13 2009 at 21:27 |
2003-2004. I remember being retrospectively pissed that I didn't catch them with Yes when they toured in my city (no one prog ever comes here, let alone non-prog), and Octavarium was the first album I got on its release day.

I don't remember the exact year I heard them, but it would have been early or mid 90s. My sister had several of their albums. It was often on in the background. I liked Caught in a Web and Pull Me under but didn't give it much thought. I heard Space Dye Vest and fell in love with the song. I bought Awake and liked it. But I really became a fan when I picked of Scenes From a Memory.

1994 - a friend of mine gave me the Images and Words album on cassette . So I've been enjoying DT in big or small doses since then.

1998--a bloke introduced me to LTE 2. Then checked out DT, shrugged, went back to LTE. Where I happily remain. For me, I guess Levin is the difference maker.

I first heard Dream Theatre back in '94, right after Awake came out. From day one I hated LaBrie's vocal style, but I persisted in listening on account of the phenomenal musicianship ...then I lost interest around '95.

I was very enthusiastic when I first heard dream theater I still like them only not as much .. their later releases seem to lack something... not Keyboard driven enough I think

I first heard dream theater in year 2007 when I get curious about the melody and the lyrics of Spirit Carries On and it's the first time I also heard progressive music.

2007 for me as well. I heard them when we were visiting family in Cananda and we got to sleep in my nephew's room. There in a stack of CDs was SDOS and upon playing the first track I was hooked. Since then I have since bought pretty much everything they have done and seen them on both their UK tours since then.

Although I have been listening to Prog Rock since 1979, I only listened to my first Dream Theater album a few months ago. It was on this website that I asked for recommendations - following the responses, I bought a copy of 'Images and Words'. I have to say that I wasn't exactly blown away at first. However, I got hold of the CD, 'Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory' a couple of weeks ago and I have listened to it about a dozen times. I love this album. It's one of the best concept albums I've ever heard.
So, inspired by this, I will definitely be buying more Dream Theater albums in the near future.
I wonder if I'm the most recent newcomer to Dream Theater in this forum? |
aha! a Prog veteran! Images and Words is garbage... (in my opinion) Scenes however, I share the same opinion as you. It's the only real DT album, and a true masterpeice of Progressive concept music. It still hasn't gotten old for me, I've heard it maybe a hundred times, at least. Since I've gotten this new computer of mine about 5 months ago, the album has 29 plays on my WMP. Just imagine the last 6 years I've had the album.

2003. i had a burnt mix cd with The Glass Prison on it, and immediately loved it. Bought Train of Thought when it came out and worked my way backwards chronologically. Octavarium was the first album to come out while being an actual fan and knowing their material, and that album changed my life. been a fan ever since.

2007. I got a demo CD with a rock mag, which had Porcupine Tree, Megadeth, Opeth, and DT on it. I enjoyed their song, so I bought an album of theirs. Octavarium. I loved it immediately, and over the last two years, i have bought their entire discography.

In 2007, but before SC came out. The first song I've heard by them was Six Degrees' Overture and the first full album was Octavarium. Now I'm a fan who owns every DVD of them and two studio albums, + the DSotM bootleg and watched them this week live

I should also add that after seeing Dream Theater in concert in 2002, the first album I picked up of theirs was Awake. It is still one of my favorite DT albums. If I recall correctly they played "The Mirror", "6:00", and possibly another song or 2 from Awke that evening. I used to have a copy of the setlist for the show, but I can't find it or the website I retrieved it.

I believe it was 2007, when Octavarium came out. I was over at a friend's house and we started watching the "Live at Budokan" DVD. He lent me a copy of Octavarium and I really enjoyed them.
