Topic: Best live album Posted: April 24 2009 at 18:58 |
I went for JT's "Bursting Out" here: at least, the sound mix wasn't unfairly low for the guitarist's input (unlike GENESIS') ;-))
Anyway, one live album I've been much into for the last 2 weeks is TWELFTH NIGHT's "Live and Let Live".
Kind regards.

The second disc is a complete performance of The Snow Goose with a large string orchestra. It surpasses the original album in power and emotional impact. Andy Latimer's guitar playing is just beautiful. One of those rare occasions where the recorded live performance is far superior to the origianl studio recordings. I would go as far as saying that this is the best album that Camel ever recorded! |
I totally agree

Also, does anybody know (or remember) "Woven Cord" by Iona with the "All Souls Orchestra" ?
It gives me a lot of shivers the first time I heard it
There isn't much record that as give me this reaction.
Since then, I am saying that David Bainbridge should be my new gourou of music - he is such a genius !

My pick from the list "Bursting Out" - Jethro Tull. My all time favourite though is "Made in Japan" - Deep Purple.

I'm disappointed that 'A Live Record' by Camel is not on the list.
In my opinion this is the greatest live album ever recorded. It was originally a double vinyl LP but has been available for a few years as a double CD. The second disc is a complete performance of The Snow Goose with a large string orchestra. It surpasses the original album in power and emotional impact. Andy Latimer's guitar playing is just beautiful. One of those rare occasions where the recorded live performance is far superior to the origianl studio recordings. Yessongs from this list by a wide margin. I'd say definitive versions of Siberian Khatru, Perpetual Change, Long Distance Runaround/the Fish, Yours is No Disgrace and Starship Trooper. Very good versions of Heart of the Sunrise, And You and I, Close to the Edge and the Wakeman solo. Poor versions of Roundabout and Seen All Good People.
From off the list my fave would be Genesis Live. I like every version there better than the studio, especially the guitar work in Musical Box and Hogweed. And Renaissance Live at Carnegie should be there too. Their version of Ashes Are Burning in a knockout.

So many great choices! Curious about Rush in Rio however. Exit Stage Left is their best. Pink Floyd's Pulse is another missed CD. I love that one. |
Cheers - I personally prefer Rush in Rio, and I really can't stand Floyd without Waters. To me they lost their creative edge and raison d'etre when he left. However, I did deliberately only choose one live LP from bands such as Rush, when I actually own all of them, and, for example, Seconds Out instead of Genesis Live to prompt debate and discussion - seems like it worked

I think I said this a while ago on another thread. "Meet the Flower Kings" is impressive if for no other reason than it is hard to believe they are playing their choice epics LIVE! There is such precision in their playing (and the recording is impeccable) that it is really hard to believe that it is a live album... |
Yep - this should certainly have been on the list - it is a great LP. However, as I said at the start of what has been a good thread, there was no rhyme nor reason to the choices - it was just a selection of ones in my collection. If I had put them all on, it would have been a helluva long list

I would have expected other live albums on the list. None of these is a favorite of min. What about the live albums of Colosseum, Wishbone Ash, Grobschnitt, Guru Guru, Kraan or Steve Hillage? Not to mention those fantastic live bands like Gong, Hawkwind, Van der Graaf Generato, Magma, King Crimson or the many live albums of Peter Hammill

I'm only really familier with two albums up there, Secret World Live and The Thieving Magpie. SWL is good but I havnt heard it for years so I cant remember it too well and TTM is poor, such a flat production and mixing.
My personal favourit is Pain of Salvations 12:5. Other notables being King Crimson- the Great Deceiver, Dream Theater- Live Scenes From New York, Marillion- Real to Reel, Threshold- Critical Energy, The Tangent- Going Off On One, Muse- HAARP, Queensryche- Operation:LIVECrime, Van der Graaf Generator- Real Time, Pain of Salvation- Ending Themes and The Gathering- Superheat and Sleepy Buildings.

From the list, "Berlin" (BJH), but I think that maybe the best prog live albums are not listed:
"A live record" (Camel)
"Welcome back my friends..." (ELP)
"Barclay James Harvest live" (BJH)
"The Tokyo tapes" (S.Hackett)
"Il best" (PFM)
and many others
