I love: 1. anything Yes had done in the '60's (1 album) and 70's 2. 90125, 3. ABWH, 4. The Key To Ascension livetracks 5. The magnificent Magnification tour with Polish orchestra. Mediocre is the word for Drama and Big Generator. I think the rest is pretty bad. In my humble opinion.

I have Close to the Edge, Yes, The Yes Album, and Yessongs on vinyl and
Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer on CD. To be honest, I
actually don't like The Yes Album very much. I've only listened to it a
few times and I've only managed to get through it all the way once.
It's just too bland for me. My favorites are CTTE, Relayer, and TFTTO.

I like Tormato also. Altho unlike Tuxon, my favorite song on the album is "Onward". The one I don't like is "Silent Wings of Freedom" and not too fond of "Circus of Heaven". I think their weakest studio effort was Big Generator.. I can't even get thru that one! |

I go to some Yes fansites where it's like the f---ing Emperor's New
Clothes - The Band That Can Do No Wrong. Irritating! Anyway, I loved
Yes' output from their first album through Drama, with the weakest along the way being Tormato. After Drama,
there were some decent moments, but really few and far between. Never
went for the in-your-face, pop stylings that started happening with 90125...never into something they seemed to be trying to recapture with later albums. Magnification was a disappointment, with In the Presence Of
being the only song that held a glimmer of interest for me. Jon
Anderson's pervasive prancing-through-the posies lyrics as of late put
me off. I'm hoping they put out a quality studio album, not music that
harks back to the past necessarily - just decent music!

Tormato is not bad penquin, it's actually a good album, but like Peter said a little unbalanced. I like the first half of the album very much, the second half is definatly whimsical, with onwards and Silent wings of freedom as boring pieces. But some people on this forum like those two songs so, I'd say go for it. And i'm awaiting your review next month |

I've already got Lark's Toungue's, actually, my aunt burned it for me, but I haven't gotten around to listening to anything but the two part title track, which are very good. But I'm just gonna give Tormato a try, why not, it's only $12. Besides, if there's anything I can take it's unseriousness, twee, fairy, and Jon Anderson. It just doesn't bug me. So far the only albums I have rated low are a bad Dream Theater live album piece o' crap, "Amused to Death", and "Heavy Horses". And truthfully, the latter two aren't that bad, just not my favorite. |

Buy something like Crimson's Lark's Tongues instead. I thing that GFTO is the last essential Yes disc. |

So far I've only got The Yes Album thru Relayer, including Yessongs. I'm looking to get Going for the One really soon (as in this week). But more recently I downloaded "Future Times/Rejoice" from Tormato and it blew me away. It almost sounds like Yes doing Gentle Giant, like a reverse "Tales from Topographic Oceans". Okay, there are two big differences: Wakeman's keyboard sounds more high-pitched, and Squire seems to be experimenting with another bass sound. It tends to get real high in the range with nothing to anchor it down, like it could float away at any second. But other than that, it sounds like genuine, but less serious and whimsical (Jon Anderson-ish) Yes. Not quite pop, really. Just bigger ideas crammed into smaller songs with less direction...like Gentle Giant's Octopus. I think I'm gonna get Tormato right after Going for the One.

I honestly cant name a prog group who are not pretentious.
Tormato is victm to bad production, each member playing fantasticly, however the overall sound is thin in some parts. apart from circus of heaven, which is just crap. |

Tormato? Release Release?
![]() I think it's pretentious. At this very moment I'm listening to it to check if my opinion is bars of chocolate or onions. It's bars of chocolate - whereas Tormentor, err, Tormato seems to be the antithesis to "Jon Anderson is a legend". On Tormentor he's just a pain in the neck ("...mee, mee, meeee..."). "What's wrong with me, Doc?" - "Sorry to say ... it's a serious falsetto. Nurse!?" ![]() |

I am actually listening to Tormato as I write and a tune that just blew me away was "Onward", now there's a song that feels it's been done honestly --- an excellent track. I think once you get past the topical goofiness of the album's first impression -- circus of heanen, ufo's, etc. the album emerges as an excellent evolution of the Yes sound -- "On the silent Wings of Freedom" wow, what an instrumental journey that takes you on. I suggest all who are deriding it give it one more listen. |

I think Tormato is one of Yes's most interesting albums, not the best, but future times, release, and The whale song have the most beautifull melodies and catchiest hooks. Also some not so good songs though. The final track, out of principle I will not mention it's name (that and I forgot it's title) is a complete boring experience.silent wings of freedom re. Teakbois from ABWH, it's indeed the worst track on a very good album, I like the version on the live album An evening of Yes music plus, accoustic guitar and Jon's vocals are great (new arrangement). |

I've listened to Yes exstensively in the past, but very, very little
during the last two years. I enjoy all the albums up to Tormato.
I have to confess that I was positively surprised when I first heard Tormato (being bashed by Yes fans everywhere for being the beginning of the end)... I've never considered the "great prog acts of the 70s" as great prog acts because they all seem to lack something... I'm still to actually nail it what it is they're lacking, but I've been working on this "problem" for ages now... I'm beginning to feel that Yes (along with Genesis, ELP, even PF and KC) are somehow pretentous. That's not actually the term I'm looking for but it has to suffice for now... There is one track on Tormato that I especially like, because it feels like it had been done "honestly" (using 'honest' as the antonym of 'pretentous' - I hope you guys don't get me wrong and start pickin on me..). The track is Release Release... It's definitely not the best composition by Yes It's definitely not the best arranged piece by Yes and it definitely does not have the best lyrics of Yes but it has the best feel to it. Far better than anything on Close to the Edge for sure. What do you guys/gals think of this? Cheers -Beau |

Agree 100 % on that one Reed in that Yes tried to do reggae which I dislike very much as a music format.

Teakbois is the stinking turd in the water bucket! Appallingly embarrassing attempt at a happy reggae tune.Anderson's lyrical style (inadvertantly) makes the song sound like it is mocking reggae vocalists. |
