I do home recording. But, I have a very simple and humble set up.
Guitars: Brian May model, Rickenbacker 360 (6 string BlueBoy), Gibson Les Paul, Rickenbacker 4003 bass, Korg M1 music workstation. A small Vox guitar amp, Gorilla Bass/Keyboard Amp. MBox firewire interface, Mac Powerbook G4 laptop. I use GarageBand and Logic Express. If anyone is interested in the noise that all this stuff makes when forced, you can hear it all at: www.myspace.com/charlieterenzio |

I looked at the Fractal, and downloaded a few samples from the user's forum. To my ears it still has that digital signature. I've no doubt that this technology will continue to improve, but I don't think valve amp manufacturers are going to be too worried.....yet. Originally posted by HughesJB4

When I click on Jazzsta's link, I get album not found, unfortunately. Edited by mr70s - October 02 2008 at 17:31 |

Hey guys! I'm completely burned out from home recording.
This is my last work: Jazzsta - Time & Death I use quite cheap stuff. But still I think I deliver the meaning... Edited by Jazzsta - September 14 2008 at 11:42 |

Hi!
Yes I know about what you stated. But all in all, a preamp into another preamp (any guitar amp has a preamp) isn't really the best thing to do... Anyway, any other home recorder who submitted his album to PA maybe? |

It's not really to do with the fact it's a preamp........... it's to do with the fact it's an amp modeling preamp. A guitar preamp, for example, a tube Mesa Boogie Traxis, is generally designed to be run with another guitar tube power amp, perhaps a Mesa Boogie Recto 2:100 or Marshall EL34-100/100 (or well, whatever tube preamp/power amp set up that captures your fancy, you get the point). These will all work and are really designed to work with a normal guitar cabinet, because of the guitar speakers frequency range of about 70Hz-5.5KHz. Or just an amplifier in general, which has a combined preamp and poweramp, like any combo amp or guitar amp head, which also matches well to a guitar speaker. As I stated above, modeling preamps go above 5.5KHz. The frequency range is determined by dividing the sampling rate of the unit by half, (Nyquist's Theorem, although I only understand the basics and wont pretend to know anymore than that, I'm no scientist by any means, look it up in Wikipedia or a physics book or something :D). My V-Amp2 has a sampling rate of 31.250KHz, so the frequency range is from 20Hz to 15.625KHz. The Fractal Audio Axe FX Standard/Ultra, goes even higher and can produce the whole 20Hz to 20KHz spectrum, and possibly more. The point is, a full frequency full range speaker can produce all of those frequencies and help the modeler to sound more realistic, which is why I recommend against using the amp modeling feature of amp modelers in normal guitar amps, and just use the effects section of the modeler instead |

I use a Fender Jazz Bass through my pedalboard--a MoogerFooger Ring Mod, Gallien-Krueger bass distortion, Morley Wah/Volume pedal, Boss Space-Echo delay, and Boss Loop Station (the twin one)--and then I put the output of the pedalboard in a splitter and send one half to an amp so I can hear what I'm doing and the other half into the line in in my computer. I record with Audacity, because it's free and easy and since I do most things in one take I don't really need many features.
You can hear my stuff here. |

Great to see more people here :) Thanks for the pictures ;)
The Big Muff is a really classic distortion pedal but it has a sound on its own, it's nearly a fuzz pedal, a really dirty distortion if you know what I mean. David Gilmour used an original one but it's David Gilmour and it sounds beautiful! You can find on Youtube a lot of Big Muff videos :) |

I just recently started to record music again ... I use:
1. Guitar: ESP Horizon NT-II 2. Interface/Midi-Keyboard: Line6 KB37 3. Amp: Line6 Gearbox 4. Recording software: Ableton Live 7 Suite I'll also get a cheap bass and a decent microphone ... then my setup will be complete. |

I see so many people with the "Big Muff" but I've never actually used it myself. How is it?
Also, very, very, very, very, very nice pictures .

This is it. Highly technologically advanced. Also, a bad picture. My cousin has many effects that can't be seen here. This is also slightly outdated. We've added more percussion/effects since this being taken.

*raises hand*
I record at home. Well...at least at my grandmother's home. I'm in a band with my cousin. I play drums/percussion/keys and he plays bass/effects/keys. He has a kick ass little recording device that really picks up the sound well...even in a basement (which is where we record). I don't know the name of it (ain't mine ) but it's pretty sweet. It picks up sounds from the upstairs, can have a ridiculous amount of different tracks, and (seeminly) has a really good memory system (at least it has almost everything we've done still on it...which is about 5 hrs worth of material). I'll see if I can get a name of this device next time we record. Also, picture of our sound space/listening samples will appear in the next post.

Yes you're right about the Vamp sound on PA system, it's because it's a preamp above all, so it doesn't work well on a guitar amp.
I didn't know the Fractal Audio Axe FX but it seems quite expensive... |

Well you can find pics of the V-Amp2 on the net obviously but I also run it through a hi fi system when practicing, so I guess I can take photos of the V-amp2 together with the stereo and my effect pedals if you desire.
The problem is when running modeling units through guitar amps is, most guitar amp speakers have a ceiling frequency range of 5KHz to 5.5KHz and usually the low frequencies start from 70-80Hz on average. I believe Line 6 use full range speakers in some of their amps though:) . Modeling units are usually full frequency, so you actually get more realistic results running it through a hi fi system, a PA system or keyboard amp (basically anything that can go from 20Hz to 20Khz, Full Range Full Frequency (FRFR). When I bought the V-amp2 I told the guys in the music store I intended to run it through a full frequency system (because the V-amp 2 goes all the way up to 16KHz, which is obviously way higher than what guitar amp speakers can produce. He told me he had never heard of people using them in anything other than guitar amps. I hate it when people are ignorant about things like that, it leads to bad advice sometimes. I've tried my V-Amp2 through a guitar amp, and I didn't like it. It sounds a bit muffled and more digital and less realistic. I've heard good things about the J Station btw, but my dream Modeling unit is the Fractal Audio Axe FX. Check it out on the new, incredible unit and every person that owns one that used to previously own a Line 6, Boss, Behringer V-amp 2 etc modeling unit says nothing comes as close to the Axe FX when recreating tube tone as good as possible. Some people actually prefer the Axe Fx to their real tube amps because of greater tweakability. |
