This morning I was listening to the Animal Logic self-titled debut album. They weren't included in the poll since they're not on PA. Is anybody familiar with them? My thoughts are that they might be a candidate for prog-related or maybe jazz/fusion or crossover. They were a band consisting of Stewart Copeland from the Police on drums and Stanley Clarke of Return to Forever fame on bass. They had a female vocalist Deborah Holland. On their first album, the guitarists were Steve Howe and Peter Haycock. I'm not sure how many songs Steve Howe appeared on. Allmusicguide describes their first album as "a cross between fusion, art rock, and album rock - blended with a slight eye on the charts". To me this sort of describes a band that might fit in that ever elusive progressive pop category. Any thoughts?

I have some of Krokodil's output, but my favourite is An Invisible World Revealed which is a great psychedelic and sometimes heavy (some blues influence even). A cool ride and the reissue has nice bonus tracks with great jamming.

Neither Green Bullfrog or Orang-Utan are on the Archives. If they belong here, you might want to suggest their additions.
In regards to Krokodil, I didn't recognize the spelling as being Crocodile and thus missed them. Here is a link to a thread started by Avestin that talks a bit about this band.

I know quite a few of those bands. All are pretty good. Black Widow doesn't really do it for me though. Their first album is the best IMO.
Badger and Blue Oyster Cult are my two favs on the list. Any BOC from the 70s is excellent. Also Death Walks Behind... by Atomic Rooster is a must have! Its killers. I don't believe I saw Krokodile (krautrock) on the list, or the Green Bullfrog (pre-Deep Purple), Also Orang-Utan. |

Aardvark is kind of ELP-like in that it's keyboard-driven. Not much to say about them... Good, but run-of-the-mill.
Atomic Rooster is closer to a straightforward rock band, with fairly minimal prog influences (at least in what I've heard) In Hearing Of and Made In England are both pretty good, but ultimately non-essential. I don't really know about the rest other than the fact the Carl Palmer played on the debut album before joining ELP (as if anyone didn't already know that  )Blue Oyster Cult is a great rock band that were allegedly only "prog" during their early years. but that doesn't devalue the rest of their career! Everybody has probably heard their HUGE hit "Don't Fear The Reaper", as well as some others such as "Burning For You" (it's not a love song!) and concert favorite "Godzilla". I'm not familiar with their early work, but as a document of their worth I'd recommend Extraterrestrial Live to someone looking for a place to start (in the band's "rock" side), which I also find preferable to their earlier big live album Some Enchanted Evening. Camel is good for some mellow but skilled playing. Typical sound of 70s Symphonic, I suppose, but they do it well. The first 4 albums (particularly Moonmadness) and Live Record are the ones to get. And as good as The Snow Goose is, the whole thing is played on Live Record. Catapilla is a really great band with a female vocalist and interesting instrumentation. Although categorized as Eclectic Prog, I have always considered them to be truly split between that genre and Jazz Rock/Fusion - lots of brass, etc. Very enjoyable listen if you are into it. PA ratings show Changes as our member's preferred album, but personally I find the debut, Catapilla to be superior (not to mention longer) BTW: Rushfan, thanks for not including DragonForce  |

Right up my alley then... I've heard a little Centipede and really liked it, but put it on the back-burner due to the fairly low rating at this site (not being a music reviewer -- I used to write film reviews for the local rag and that, as well as my studies, is what put me off -- I tend to be lazy about reading reviews, but read yours and that really piqued my interest). Centipede is a combination of Lizard era King Crimson and Soft Machine doing their avant-garde jazz improv thing. There are lots of members from both bands in this huge jazz orchestra led by Keith Tippet. Read my review of the album for more info.

The track I'd most recommend, generally, to Prog fans from Arachnoid is the first one "La Chamadere" (check out myspace). It's an album that crosses styles that could be a great gateway into other French bands (and into the more avant side of things). The mellotron was mentioned, but, although I like many albums that uses Mellotron (and it can be extensive), I'm generally not a mellotron fan (I know that makes me a heretic)... It's the piano which is so enjoyable in that album for me, but it's a good combination of electric and acoustic.
I have drifted from that album somewhat as I got into other music (and that was a fairly early one for me after I got back into Prog in a big way), but a big hand for Arachnoid -->

I am listening to Toutes Ces Images from Arachnoid's self-titled album from the stream on PA. It is quite good. And not surprisingly, from their page on PA, I was led to a thread started by Avestin which recommends this band.

Carptree is a duo from Sweden (yeah, the prog Sauna!) that has one real good album "SuperHero" that has a modern Gabriel tinge to it with some splendid tunes. The 2 follow ups "Man Made Machine" and "Instinkts" are not as impressive , somehow not clicking with me , needing perhaps some more attention.

It's a wonderful album of the electro-acoustic variety. In the past, I've usually listed it as my favourite in Symphonic Prog (and, along with Carpe Diem and Shylock, set me off on a French "Symphonic Prog" journey). Definitely listen to the streaming mp3 here (that's how I discovered it, by going through all the Symphonic Prog mp3s). It's theatrical, spooky, but also fun, and has avant rock qualities. SO it would be an easy one to vote for me. More recently, however, I've been really into Art Bears and related music, so I'll give it to Art Bears. The World as it is Today was the album that got me into the Bears "Out of town, my work takes me out of town. I empty villages, I burn their houses down..." It appeals to my RiO and Canterbury side. |

Atomic Rooster for me

Atomic Rooster, a perfect clearence of what is heavy prog about, you will enjoy if you like hammond driven bands, if you like Deep Purple, this is a great heavy prog band to follow, their debut, and In Hearing of the Atomic Rooster are really good, but their most DP stlyish and more hammond driven is their their great Death Walks Behind You.
Then Made In England and Nice an' Greasy are like Stormbringer in some way, with much funk elemnts leaving the heaviness. |

I also suggest getting Arachnoid, another one-shot deal from France that has an eerie ,spooky "Metallique" aura to it , very sombre and highly original. sinkadotentree is, as usual , hyper-correct .
