I would go against Kibble_Alex's advice and strap them to a bench on the side walk and give them at least a 5 min speech on prog

It has multiple definitions:
1. Forward-thinking, rock-based music 2. A term to describe bands who work within the styles of of the bands in definition 1, without necessarily progressing things themselves
it's really about as simples as that.

Prog is a pretty little flower that smells really bad.

My answer is simple: Prog=Art. Other music is just music, and prog is not music, is art.

Prog is the creation of very moving music which gets the goosepimples going, shivers down your spine and all the other emotions you can think of.
Then totally shag it up with some crap drumming.
Think Magenta - Seven, Galahad - Empires, Salva - Left to Burn among a lot of others.

Say Art Rock and they will get an idea, tell them to come to this site and they will be more confused than before they asked.
Ahem, Prog does not make a lot of sense but we can not change it now. I personally do not use the term much.

It's not necessarily a measure of intelligence so much as it is an indicator of intelligence. Musical intelligence isn't an oxymoron, or mythological, it's real.

It's not that people are unable to like or understand prog, it's that they won't "waste" time trying to discover a kind of music that's more complex than what they're used to.

Progressive rock isn't a style. Prog rock is a searching. Most of instruments are rock-related instrumens, but other instruments are from differents folk styles (from all the countries). Harmony and rhythm aren't typical of rock.
