Now i know the archives have made a very good description on what prog is.

but if someone asks you on the street what is is, you ain't gona produce paragraphs of speech are you LOL

so what i want to hear are simple one sentence descriptions for "what is prog?".

my suggestion is:
rock music for intelligent people.

tell me what you think

I really don't see how liking prog is any measure of intelligence.

If somebody asked me in the street (as strange as it sounds) i'll tell him to sit down and relax and then i would start by prog history and samples from my ipod. Now, i know i won't do this with any stranger, however, there is one definition that i would use. I know it is not very accurate but it can open the door for the person who asks to search new music. this definition I´m speaking about is "music which uses rock elements to create ever-changing textures and melodies" simple and true but again, not very accurate.

if prog really stood for progressive then this site would list about a thirtieth of the bands it currently has. the "prog != progressive" argument has arrived chiefly because the lack of innovation over the years forces everyone to examine even slightly unusual music that much closer ;P

(this opinion was controversial about thirty five years ago) ;P

I certainly agree with the lack of innovation, I also can't escape the feeling that most innovation and musical progress since at least the 80's was achieved outside of so-called prog.
There is, however, a noticeable change in sound, production and songwriting between the 60's and the 70's with longer, thoroughly-structured songs, more complex meters and rhythms etc. all things that were rarely/never done before, which might all very well be the reason for calling our beloved music prog in the first place. later after the initial developing phase (read:first wave british prog), other bands took the example of the previous bands and couldn't help sounding like the previous bands. and now a band is often not considered prog it they don't sound like a familiar band from the past, no matter how innovative and groundbreaking those later bands may be.
Apparently, some people don't recognise progressiveness if it bit them in the nose.

Progressive rock isn't a style. Prog rock is a searching. Most of instruments are rock-related instrumens, but other instruments are from differents folk styles (from all the countries). Harmony and rhythm aren't typical of rock.

It's not that people are unable to like or understand prog, it's that they won't "waste" time trying to discover a kind of music that's more complex than what they're used to.

It's not necessarily a measure of intelligence so much as it is an indicator of intelligence. Musical intelligence isn't an oxymoron, or mythological, it's real.

Say Art Rock and they will get an idea, tell them to come to this site and they will be more confused than before they asked.

Ahem, Prog does not make a lot of sense but we can not change it now. I personally do not use the term much.

Prog is the creation of very moving music which gets the goosepimples going, shivers down your spine and all the other emotions you can think of.

Then totally shag it up with some crap drumming.

Think Magenta - Seven, Galahad - Empires, Salva - Left to Burn among a lot of others.

My answer is simple: Prog=Art. Other music is just music, and prog is not music, is art.

it is gorp when spelled backwards.

-------------

Posted By: stonebeard

It has multiple definitions:

1. Forward-thinking, rock-based music
2. A term to describe bands who work within the styles of of the bands in definition 1, without necessarily progressing things themselves

it's really about as simples as that.
