Topic: KERRRAAANNGG - NWOBHM !!!!!! Posted: August 13 2006 at 10:22 |
I'll go along with Janick in some respects; like Def Leppard they have probably been put in with the NWOBHM for historical convenience. WS are certainly heavy on the keyboards far more than any other NWOBHM band- in fact, I can think of none other that had keys as part of the band, not just on a session basis.

There is no way Judas Priest could have been NWOBHM. They actually began as a band in 1969, although none of the members from that incarnation made it when they recorded their debut 'Rocka Rolla' in 1974. Even then, that's a long while before the NWOBHM is seen to have started. The same goes for Motorhead, imo. The musicians had been around for years and had varying degrees of success in other bands. Also, the early line-up was not the same as the famous one that did Ace Of Spades et al, and started immediately after Lemmy had been fired from Motorhead. Budgie even less so, seeing as their debut was out in 1971!!
An amazing movement, the NWOBHM- so much amazing quality music. I collect this genre and it's my favourite of the metal genres. Only one band here ever made it to the world class stages- Iron Maiden. To be honest, I think it's fairly obvious it would have been them if you compare their musical ability to some of the other bands, and the compositions themselves. I'd vote them, but I like most of the others.
Diamond Head were the band with the most potential together with Maiden, but they just lost the plot at a certain point. Saxon were not bad, though in no way innovative.
Incidentally, I read an interview with Joe Elliott of Def Leppard recently where he dismissed the idea that Leppard were ever part of the NWOBHM. Although chronologically they would fit in with it, the music is generally far more polished and mostly, imo, AOR based than any other band of the genre.
I read the same interview, on Classic Rock magazine. I agree with what you say too, although their first album was sure more metal than the rest.
One of the best bands in terms of all out ability that you don't mention are White Spirit. They have the raw edge of NWOBHM but an element of the pomp rock that Styx, Starcastle, Magnum etc. were doing.
In the Maiden biography by Mick Wall, former White Spirit guitarist (now with IM) Janick Gers said that WS were never really part of the NWOBHM, since their sound was markedly different.

The singer they got was Brian Howe, who replaced Paul Rodgers in Bad Company and sang with Ted Nugent, I think...

I have seen nearly every one of those bands. The 'Rock Garden' in Middlesbrough had a rock night every Friday. 'Iron Maiden', I remember were great. It was before they had made their first album, and they were one of the few bands that had a great stage show, even then. I remember seeing that Bruce Bruce fella in Samson too. Whatever happened to him I wonder?

I'm with you on this, Tony. Priest, Motorhead and Budgie existed way before the beginning of the NWOBHM, though they were going strong at that time, and this resulted in their being lumped in with other, more recent bands. However, it is also quite clear that they were a clear influence on some of those bands: Motorhead for Girlschool, Raven and Tank, Priest for Iron Maiden and Saxon, to name but two.

They were a part of the movement once it started though. I don't see how you can NOT be a part of different movements throughout the career. JP's other albums were done in other styles too. How about the poppy Turbo Lover and the Speed Metalish Painkiller?
