Not an easy band to get into but once acquire the taste you won't be able to get enough of them. My favourite Genesis track is Back In NYC off the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

i actually downloaded the gentle giant mp3s on this site and i liked them. "knots" is great!

gentle giant is great. I suggest "octopus" , although its only about 30 mins long (i know , a bit on the short side) its very good and has "knots" on it. (wot a fun song!)

I remember the first time I heard Genesis. It was Selling England, I hated it. It seemed overdone, longwinded, and pompus. With all music though, I gave it a second listen. I instantly was converted, suddenly music was a different experiance for me. If it werent for Genesis, music wouldnt have a shred of its current importance in my life.

Ok, im obviously a huge Genesis fan. It all started two years ago when i decided to play my dad's vinyl of "A trick of The Tail" which, obviously, blew me away. It all began with this album and it seems to be the genesis album for the non fan (who eventually becomes devoted to the band). Being interested, i bought "FOxtrot" a few months later and was once again blown away. but this was a different Genesis...a Peter Gabriel genesis. This was a Genesis that was whimsical, smart and self indulgant. This was a Genesis band that ENJOYED the music. But since you already own "FOxtrot", perhaps getting "A Trick Of The Tail" will help you appeaciatte it more. You could also try the mellower, but brilliant  "SElling England..." But for me, the "TRICK OF THE TAIL" and "FOXTROT" combination did wonders.

get "The Battle of Epping Forest" and "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight".

Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are my personal favorites.

I never liked genesis at first either, I didnt like peter's voice at the time, but I grew into it eventually and now peter is my favorite singer and genesis I like almost as much as my favorite band Rush!

Yeah, if you're looking for blazing guitar distortion, you aren't going to find it with Genesis, thats for sure.

I'm a personal fan of Trick of the Tail, thats my favorite Genesis album followed by Foxtrot and Selling England. I think the first side of Trick is amazing... dance on a volcano, entangled, squonk, and mad man moon are all fantastic pieces... especially entangled, man that song is well done.

I concur with most opinion on here...When I was young I liked Genesis but I disliked Yes and ELP - thought they were too harsh and erratic, but eventually Yes and ELP became more and more appealing - Now I give everything a good listening to - and I feel that most prog has something to give me in the long-term.

The depth of choice is the best thing about prog because it covers music from the "Death-speed" Metal to the classical whisper........

Thats why we like it!

As Peter rightly says, it's a matter of individual taste.

I like everything they done up to and including Duke in 1980. After that they were too pop for me. frenchie, I'm not surprised you were blown away by 'Dance on a volcano' Its a brilliant song, one of the best they ever wrote IMO. I love 'Foxtrot' I think its one of their best albums, along with 'The Lamb..' but my only criticism of the Gabriel era stuff is the production, and the fact they had not really matured as musicians. But, hey neither is their fault. It was the early 70's and they were still learning their craft.

I am a massive Genesis fan, but to me you sound like I am with Yes. I like certain tracks and generally their later stuff appeals more to me than the albums most Yes fans rave about like, 'Close to the edge' 'Fragile' etc..

Glad you liked 'In the cage' and 'The knife'  Great songs!

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

ErmmGet a time machine, go back to around '72....

Taste is individual. Genesis has lots of beauty. Do you typically like harder-edged stuff?

Maybe you just haven't "grown into" Genesis yet -- it took me a year or so of exposure. Did you love coffee first time you tried it? Beer? Guinness stout?

Then again, not all of us here like all of the old prog bands equally well. No one, 47 or 17, is REQUIRED to like Genesis, or Gentle Giant, or Van Der Graaf Generator.

There is no magic formula to MAKE you like a given group or music type, though time often works.

I didn't like Victorian novels or Shakespeare when I was your age -- I love them now, but plenty of guys my age (my friends, even) have no interest in them.... Fair enough -- there's other things we agree on.

Good luck -- you'll find your prog niche!  Smile

Quote 'Three Sides Live' is better as long you ignore the first 2 sides

I have that too!

Yes, Genesis is just "one of those bands" that you may not like right away, which might turn away many potential fans. Same thing with most of Yes's songs. I had to listen to Roundabout and Siberian Khatru like 4 times before I started liking them!

Just don't give up on them, because Genesis is a very rewarding band.

My method to accept Gabriel Genesis is simple, start by this tracks:

  1. White Mountain...... Trespass
  2. Fountain of Salmacis......Nursery Cryme
  3. Harold the Barrell......Nursery Cryme
  4. Can-Utility and the Coastliners....Foxtrot
  5. Supper's Ready.....Foxtrot
  6. I Know What I Like....Selling England by the Pound
  7. Firth of Fifth.....Selling England by the Pound
  8. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.....The Lamb
  9. In the Cage.....The Lamb
  10. Carpet Crawlers....The Lamb

Not necesarily the best tracks, but this selection I recorded in a cassette worked for a friend of mine who is a hardcore Genesis fan today.

When you get used to this songs, investigate deeper into the albums.

Iván

It took me a long time to appreciate Foxtrot. No need to give up on it ,just give it time. There is no rush to have to like anything.
