I got the synth solo down, but I can't get all of the opening without screwing it up somewhere.

I found another nice one on youtube:
Check this out ! The youth has the future as they say. I can't get enough of this one. Just a Gabriel was missing and the production is awful of course but other than that .....
As I say this: watch the girl from 3:43 till 4:17, I think it's even better than Gabriel !! And how about "Hackett" ?
I mean how old are they: 14, 15 ? Amazing, isn't it ?

I'm working on the whole thing for solo piano at the moment. I'm trying to get the same arpeggio style of the intro through the verses, but it's taking a fair bit of time, and I keep getting distracted... |

I used to play it mainly to show off (and it was FUN) ... it took me dozens of hours but I managed to play the intro and an acceptable-enough piano version of all the rest.
I forgot it. |

I don't play, but I do have a couple of interesting stories about it. I was listening to Genesis one day, and the intro to "Firth of Fifth" started. My mother, who was a concert pianist, rushed in and asked "What is that?" She became a Genesis fan that day.
When I was in college, we had a piano in the fraternity house. One day, one of the guys sat down to play. Imagine my surprise when he effortlessly went into the "Firth of Fith" intro. |

Very nice. I also play drums. That song was on my practice list for a few years back 20 years ago. I really dug the 7/8 jam in the middle. I still play that main pattern on occasion.

Well, Im two years older now so make that 5-6
![]() Actually, other than Mike Giles on KC's two first albums, it was Phil Collins drumming on the early Genesis albums that made me take my drumming seriously. He's actually one of my favorite drummers!

I found a better version of the Firth of Fifth intro that's laid out neater than Yaksongs version.
http://www.rawbw.com/~marka/cgi-bin/genpage.cgi/music/firth. html This one not only looks better but it makes more sense. Edited by skyhawk |

Hi, I have done the 1st page - let me know if this works for you. Note: - where it says a single note name - play as octaves - where there is a chord, you will see the name of the chord underlined & then beneath the notes that make it up in the correct order - i.e. the chord in bar 3 is C7 - there are several dozen ways to play C7 (if not more) - the notes here & their order from top to bottom are the way the chord is played on the recording (IMO) Have fun ! http://www.yaksongs.com/adcbfirthp1LC.html M |

Thanks man! I never thought i would ever be able to read music, but really within the last year i have hit a new level of skill i never imagined...i can play just about anything i want to if i put in a few hours, by ear that is! I got that right hand down perfectly, and i know the piano like a pattern, like i know music, all in a pattern form, the general scales and all... Anyway, im sure i could figure it out just from chords names, that would be perfect, thanks! |

That would be Octaves - there are no single notes in the LH* ! It's a lot of octave work & chords. The 4321 would be octave Eb, D,Db & C's If you look at page 1 of the score even not being able to read music, you should be able to see where the octave decending (your 4321) bit is If I was to annotate a chord & say C#,D,F#,A as a chord (i.e. Dma7 3rd inversion - which is what I meant to say in the previous post rather than 4th doh!) can you relate that to the piano? or do you not know where the notes are even? I am not being patronising I just need to guage what will work before I write it down for you. If you have worked the RH out by ear - learning to read music would be a piece of **ss - I strongly recommend you take a few lessons or spend some time with someone who can show you the basics as playing by ear is great - but being able to read too is key IMHO. All the best Martin * Yeah OK, page 4 of my score has the last note as a single - but apart from that... |
