Yaksongs (also a ProgArchives-member) worked on the score. He made a great score.

Here's the link: http://www.yaksongs.com/musicxyzscores.html - http://www.yaksongs.com/musicxyzscores.html

I'm still trying to master it.

Have fun!

Even Tony Banks found the opening section too hard to play live, hence the absence of it on "Seconds out".

Try to ask it Carakhello, he is from Spanish progrock band Senogul and has played Firth Of Fifth wonderfully with his band. He is on the memberlist so you can send a PM.

I glanced at it from a mysongbook.com version and the right hand seemed quite easy, haven't tried left hand yet. I could see how long it'll take me to learn it (for piano).

Okay, so I checked the sheet and it does seem harder than I first thought.

So you play it better than Tony Banks, then? You'll probably be nominated for a PA-award in that case

Well - it is a bit of a bugger ! - but probably took about 2/3 hours to get to the level of the mp3 I listed above (in several sessions over a couple of weeks !)

The RH alone is not toooo bad & neither is the LH - on its own - but there are a few bits where it is hard to get them together in time (the triplit bits).

The most awkward bit is the bit before it comes back into the main theme - this is only really best attempted following several pan galactic gagle blasters

I know you said you don't read music - is the score of no use at all? Not being funny (for once) do you know the notes of the stave lines? - I can annotate if it helps - then you can work out all the others (above & below the stave) & then you're off...

Trick is to learn to play this slow all the way through before winding the speed up

Cheers

Martin

When I was at school, way back in the last century in the days when colour TV and digital watches were cutting edge technology, there was a boy a year or two above me who could play it note for note on the school piano, which many of us considered to be one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century. Mrs Syzygy, a very talented pianist, rates it as moderately challenging.

Yaksongs, ive learned the entire right by ear, i know it is flawless, i play it with the recording it is perfect...and i am a perfectionsit so it took me a while!

The chords i will figure out, if you could tell me the general names of them that would be great!

OK I'll have a go at annotating the score - are you OK with things like Dma7 4th inversion etc?

no not at all, i cannot read music at all...but i have a website that has all of the piano chords virtualized on screen.  I played the right hand in the chapel today at school it sounded beautiful!

question. in the left hand he is playing chords, and single notes as well right? Like when he does the first chord and goes bang, bang bang up higher, and then 1-2-3-4 connected going downard, that 1 2 3 4 is all single notes right?

4 3 2 1 would make more sense

That would be Octaves - there are no single notes in the LH* ! It's a lot of octave work & chords.

The 4321 would be octave Eb, D,Db & C's If you look at page 1 of the score even not being able to read music, you should be able to see where the octave decending (your 4321) bit is

If I was to annotate a chord & say C#,D,F#,A as a chord (i.e. Dma7 3rd inversion - which is what I meant to say in the previous post rather than 4th doh!) can you relate that to the piano? or do you not know where the notes are even? I am not being patronising I just need to guage what will work before I write it down for you.

If you have worked the RH out by ear - learning to read music would be a piece of **ss - I strongly recommend you take a few lessons or spend some time with someone who can show you the basics as playing by ear is great - but being able to read too is key IMHO.

All the best

Martin

* Yeah OK, page 4 of my score has the last note as a single - but apart from that...

Thanks man! I never thought i would ever be able to read music, but really within the last year i have hit a new level of skill i never imagined...i can play just about anything i want to if i put in a few hours, by ear that is!

I got that right hand down perfectly, and i know the piano like a pattern, like i know music, all in a pattern form, the general scales and all...

Anyway, im sure i could figure it out just from chords names, that would be perfect, thanks!

Hi, I have done the 1st page - let me know if this works for you.

Note: - where it says a single note name - play as octaves

- where there is a chord, you will see the name of the chord underlined & then beneath the notes that make it up in the correct order - i.e. the chord in bar 3 is C7 - there are several dozen ways to play C7 (if not more) - the notes here & their order from top to bottom are the way the chord is played on the recording (IMO)

Have fun !

I found a better version of the Firth of Fifth intro that's laid out neater than Yaksongs version.

Well, Im two years older now so make that 5-6Tongue

Actually, other than Mike Giles on KC's two first albums, it was Phil Collins drumming on the early Genesis albums that made me take my drumming seriously. He's actually one of my favorite drummers!

Very nice. I also play drums. That song was on my practice list for a few years back 20 years ago. I really dug the 7/8 jam in the middle. I still play that main pattern on occasion.

I don't play, but I do have a couple of interesting stories about it. I was listening to Genesis one day, and the intro to "Firth of Fifth" started. My mother, who was a concert pianist, rushed in and asked "What is that?" She became a Genesis fan that day.

When I was in college, we had a piano in the fraternity house. One day, one of the guys sat down to play. Imagine my surprise when he effortlessly went into the "Firth of Fith" intro.

I used to play it mainly to show off (and it was FUN) ... it took me dozens of hours but I managed to play the  intro and an acceptable-enough piano version of all the rest.

I forgot it.

I'm working on the whole thing for solo piano at the moment.  I'm trying to get the same arpeggio style of the intro through the verses, but it's taking a fair bit of time, and I keep getting distracted...

Check this out ! The youth has the future as they say. I can't get enough of this one. Just a Gabriel was missing and the production is awful of course but other than that .....
As I say this: watch the girl from 3:43 till 4:17, I think it's even better than Gabriel !! And how about "Hackett" ?
I mean how old are they: 14, 15 ? Amazing, isn't it ?
