Topic: prog needs a new name ... Posted: January 30 2006 at 05:55 |

There isn`t any such thing as progressive rock , its all been done before , theres nothing new under the sun. The term progressive means to move forward, to break new ground , to boldly go where no one has gone before. Prog seems to slip side ways but as far as new ground, thats a joke. What prog needs to do is reinvent itself find a new name that doesn't stress the artists to live up to false expectations. |
Rock can't progress any further because it's dead.

If you think rock isn't progressing anymore, maybe you're just looking in the wrong places . There are plenty of really innovative artists out there, and to deny that proves nothing but your own inability to find them.

Ahum if ye even bothered checking out the RIO/Avant garde section you would find there is still lots of original music around
Just look at stuff like Fantomas or Mr.Bungle
Even some symphonic prog bands is still quite original...but ofcourse the most original bands are usually the least popular

I think it's still progressing just as any other music is.
don't forget about King Crimson, they continue to break new ground every year and they still are!

Progressive rock is just a label that stuck. It was initially called "progressive" because it was different from the other kinds of music at the time. True, it's not a perfect label but it seems to be the most common eventhough many people don't like it mainly because they are taking it to literally and can't understand that it's just a label to describe the approach to the music and not meant to be literal. Look at it this way. Prog will probably always be progressive compared to anything that you hear on the radio or anything that is "popular"(ie top 40).

No. Look at BE for example. I haven't heard anything even similar to that. Sure, there are prog bands that aren't incredibly original, but still more original than most recycled mainstream garbage. Besides, originality doesn't matter too much, as long as it's appealing to me.
