^ Let's just say the 1970s were the greatest decade ever.
Any period with Andy Kaufman and Prog was not to be missed. Edited by Atavachron - January 12 2025 at 01:49 |

^ highly contentious for all sorts of reasons. BUT 'prog' in the seventies was narrow. There were a whole raft of bands that were not prog but now considered so. Even Jethro Tull were barely prog compared to ELP, Yes, Genesis and Crimson. Those were the big four. Tull were a heavy folk blues band with some prog pretensions. Rush were a hard rock band with some prog pretensions. Floyd were a psyche band with some prog pretensions. As so we can go on. However we can't just draw the boundaries how we like according to our personal tastes IMO.

I would say Rush is MORE PROG than Pink Floyd, but LESS PROG than Yes, Genesis and King Crimson.
Their two most successful albums are generally not prog in my book: 2112 is straight up classic hard rock (not much different than Zeppelin/Deep Purple style of hard rock) and that album is very popular with hard rock fans for a reason; Moving Pictures - it's mostly AOR and arena rock, only two tracks can pass as prog rock (The Camera Eye and YYZ). Out of classic prog names only Pink Floyd (I personally consider them barely prog) and Rush have a big portion of non-prog public. It seems that Rush and King Crimson generally don't share the SAME AUDIENCE.

Your right.....not needed for the masses or those that have been on PA for so long. But I welcome the (non trolling) question about this as it may be coming from a prog newbie who is just getting into this F*up prog rabbit hole and needs help.

^ It's not necessary. This topic is trolling. As for if it matters, from one perspective, this is Prog Archives, so I can understand why it would matter to an archive of prog and people who not only build but those who use these archives.
I find these kind of "this or not this" dichotomies silly, whether coming from a troll like with this topic or more earnest people. I see Prog as a spectrum, an umbrella, the term can be so nebulous and there are no clear-cut boundaries (in fact the lack of clear boundaries is part of kind of the point of progressive rock and progressive music commonly). It's amorphous. And a band/artist can release both Prog and non-prog material. I would sooner claim that Rush released prog material than Rush is prog in-and-of-itself. That said, I'm fine with describing Rush aa a Prog band, even if not everything they released is Prog. because the relation to prog is a big part of Rush's identity. Rush: Prog? Check! Hard rock? Check! AOR? Check! Pop Rock? Check! Bootycore? If you consider some of the album covers. Edited by Logan - January 10 2025 at 12:27 |

Why is such a question even necessary? And above all, why does it matter if Rush are prog? They weren't when they started out, then Neal Peart traveled to Europe, heard some great music, came back to Canada and brought in these different influences as the story goes. Their music did get quite proggy in the late 70s and remained so for a couple more years in the 80s (although one might make the argument that they never really refrained from the progressive rock sound [whatever that sound might be, right ![]() ![]() Not that I completely disapprove of discussions of old bands (especially when I participate or sometimes initiate them) but the fact that they are still dominating over discussions of newer bands is frustrating.

It's clear that progressive/prog concerts at this level will cease to exist....I knew once Rush stopped touring experiencing this is not possible anymore. I'm glad for the videos to help me remember what amazing performances they always gave and the incredible joy it was to see them live over my past 40+ years with Rush in my musical life. Yes a wonderful band.....
