My machine lists killer albums such as Joe Jackson Body and Soul, David Sylvian Brilliant Trees, Thomas Dolby The Flat Earth, Comsat Angels Fiction and of course Three of a Perfect Pair in this year.

A good year indeed. My preferred ones of this list are Perfect Strangers, Fugazi, 1984 and The Sentinel. Very much hesitating between the excellent Marillion and the excellent Pallas... Will go with The Sentinel. Back in the 80s this was one of my preferred neo-prog albums, whereas Fugazi came after Script... and I always preferred Script over Fugazi... The Sentinel is in between these two.

The razamataz is a pain in the bum

1984-1990 remain dark years for me. My favourite album from 1984 is most probably R.E.M. - Reckoning.

Just so you know, I didn't know half of these albums back then. I discovered most of the more difficult/demanding ones (like the RIO/Avant albums cited) some 10 years later.

But 84 (the year I graduated from Uni) is +/- the year I stopped listening to rock/pop and turned the radio off. In the last two years (81 onwards), I had discovered most of these JR/F bands, and would spend most of the rest of the decade lostening to that and 60's jazz (Coltrane, Davis, Brubeck , Mingus, etc...)
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
