Returning to the original topic - 3 Friends is a very good album, but probably not the best place for a GG novice to start - Acquiring The Taste and Octopus are much more representative of their style. It's probably the closest they came to straightforward rock music in their pre 1976 albums, and for that reason is often considered to be the joker in the pack. Even GG fans who don't get the album as a whole generally acknowledge that 'Peel The Paint' is one of their all time classics. Over most of the album the music and lyrics blend together seamlessly to describe the different characters, in a way that few other prog acts really managed - only VDGG spring to mind.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Robert Wyatt, Gloria Gloom

Hey Karnevil, ELP's first 3 studio albums were amazing with their eponymous 1st for me their best. As for 3 Fates, well, her more than friendship with a certain Mr.Greg Lake and a few others was well catalogued on here before Christmas, but she's more than unusually quiet at the moment.Guess she's up in the Catskills reading her cherished ELP literature, she'll surely get to sleep that way

No squabbling just a trouble causing member who has no constructive back bone.

Regarding G.G....

Go for there debut album 'Gentle Giant' Excellent, many find it of poor production, but not me.

I've got almost all GG stuff on vinyl up 'til 'Missing Piece', but still missing out on 'Octopus' (although I heard that one and love it). My favs are 'In A Glass House' and 'Free Hand'.

You may be right about the prog fans liking them ... (I'll never forget hearing Peel The Paint for the first time ... and I've seen other proggers jaws drop when I played them that one) ...  but by God, most of my non-prog friends despise Gentle Giant ...
