Lead vocals: Phil Three friends are made, three lives are laughs and tears
Through years of school and play they share
As time stands still the days change into years
And future comes without a care.
But fate and skill and chances play their part
The wind of change leaves no good-bye
Three boys are men their ways have drawn apart
They tell their tales to justify.

Lead vocals: Phil There's a cat prowling through the streets at night
And she's black and her eyes are burning yellow
fierce and bright
The lights are darkened;
Senses sharpened;
Wide awake
As she acts out her past of Jungle days
When the night was her friend in many other
different ways
It gave protection
Of detection
By her prey
With a sway and swing she walks away
And the look in her eye it never seems
to say
The way she's feeling
No revealing,

"Prologue" is a song from Gentle Giant's fantastic album called "Three Friends". And "Black Cat" is from GG's "Acquiring The Taste". I think he wanted us to talk about this.
ok
Gentle Giant kicks ass!

I have all the albums by Gentle Giant (including two live-albums) except that compilation of unreleased tracks... The band is one of my mostly favorite
My favorite albums are the debut one (the most favorite!) and Acquiring The Taste. Though I consider THREE FRIENDS as the least strong album by GG till 1977... It seems rather naive and not so impressive to me.

WOW...!!!!... It never ceases to amaze me how Gentle Giant is never spoken of in a derogatory manner......!!!!!! Albeit that I realize this is a progressive forum, The Boys In The Band are still Tops .......
Lead vocals: Kerry As the dust settles, see our dreams,
all coming true
it depends on you,
If our times, they are troubled times,
show us the way,
tell us what to do.
As our faith, maybe aimless blind,
hope our ideals and
our thoughts are yours
And believing the promises,
please make your claims
really so sincere.
Be our guide, our light and our way of life
and let the world see the way we lead our way.
Hopes, dreams, hopes dreaming that all our
sorrows gone.
In your hands, holding everyone's
future and fate
It is all in you,
Make us strong build our unity,
all men as one
it is all in you.
Be our guide, our light and our way of life
and let the world see the way we lead our way.
Hopes, dreams, dreaming that all our sorrows
gone forever.

BTW, I also really prefer VDGG to ELP as the more thoughtful, original, stable-in-quality and sincere band (don't take an offence ). ELP were more pompous and technically skilled, but these compounds are not so general for myself in Music... And ELP were the 1st Big Prog-Band which got the crises of ideas and turned into pop-oriented music...

You may be right about the prog fans liking them ... (I'll never forget
hearing Peel The Paint for the first time ... and I've seen other
proggers jaws drop when I played them that one) ... but by God,
most of my non-prog friends despise Gentle Giant ...

Hey Karnevil, ELP's first 3 studio albums were amazing with their eponymous 1st for me their best. As for 3 Fates, well, her more than friendship with a certain Mr.Greg Lake and a few others was well catalogued on here before Christmas, but she's more than unusually quiet at the moment.Guess she's up in the Catskills reading her cherished ELP literature, she'll surely get to sleep that way

Returning to the original topic - 3 Friends is a very good album, but probably not the best place for a GG novice to start - Acquiring The Taste and Octopus are much more representative of their style. It's probably the closest they came to straightforward rock music in their pre 1976 albums, and for that reason is often considered to be the joker in the pack. Even GG fans who don't get the album as a whole generally acknowledge that 'Peel The Paint' is one of their all time classics. Over most of the album the music and lyrics blend together seamlessly to describe the different characters, in a way that few other prog acts really managed - only VDGG spring to mind.
