Topic: WORST Octavarium Song Posted: September 13 2005 at 23:36 |
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I must also give my vote to I Walk
Beside You, although Never Enough and Sacrificed Sons didn't do much
for me either. Even though it's generic and poppy, I like These
Walls for some reason.

The Answer Lies Within. I absolutely love all the songs on the album (yes, even "I walk beside you"), but this is the one that I just have to skip on the CD player when it reaches it.

I Walk Beside You gets my vote too ... IMO, the title track is clearly the best
|
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I actually thought most of the album, bar the title track, was quite cheesy, but 'I Walk Beside You' was just plain bad...

Ha, that`s better . OK, I get your point but I still think Octavarium is one of their best songs

Octavarium is a dull song- takes WAY too long to get going. I always fast forward the first 10 minutes or so.

It's not a joke ... maybe I exaggerated a bit, but I really think that it's the worst song on the album.
- The noodling on the keyboard in the beginning is nice, but uncalled for.
- The following Shine On You Crazy Diamond reference also makes no sense to me. Dream Theater's other albums contain little (if any) PF references, so what's the point? Were they trying to say "Listen to this, we can sound like PF if we want to"?
- Then the vocals kick in ... and that part has overly complex chord progressions. In my subjective opinion the complexity is also uncalled for here. It's like they were trying to make this the most complex "simple" song ever.
- After that a complex riff on the bass introduces the first part of the song that I really like. I really like how the epic evolves from here, and everything is alright until the "outro".
- In the outro we essentially get the noodling from the beginning on the guitar.
Mind you, I actually like the album AND the song. It's just not as good as their other albums. I'd rate Octavarium 3 stars as an album and 2 stars as a song.
BTW: The most alarming signal that the song is bad is that most people who don't like Prog Metal (and DT in particular) say that they like that song ... it simply isn't DT. It's against everything that I&W, Awake or Scenes stand for.
