Just a silly side note...there's a Masonic Temple building (nice old design and brick work) right on downtown main street in my little Indiana town...been there since the early 20th century probably. I have lived here 36 years...and I have never seen one person going in or out, musician or otherwise ,so they must surely be discreet.

Cyril Wakeman had been a Freemason in London. When he died, several members of the Lodge came to see is widow. They told her that should she need anything.. if she needs any help with the funeral etc, ten she only needs to call them. They would remain unobtrusive, but would always be there for her. This is what inspired Rick to join Chelsea Lodge No. 3098.
In Freemasonry, you don't "get it through family connections". Anyone can be a Freemason providing he has a belief in a Supreme Being (doesn't matter which one) is of a minimum are (usually 21) and can afford the fees..... usually less than a couple of hundred quid per year. You will never be invited...YOU have to ASK THEM to join. I was at Chelsea Lodge No. 3098 when Rick was Installed as the Worshipful Master at Freemasons Hall. Roger De Courcey (yes, him with Nookie Bear) was his Proposer in to Freemasonry and was also there when Rick took the Chair.

It is a secret society as it operates within government and justice. There is nothing discreet about the nefarious back-room favours among fellow masons.

When I think of masons, I think about the Rolling Stones and the album Thick as a Brick. Maybe some early Musique Concrete.

Maybe not there but in Canada it is. All their windows are boarded up or blackened and I know someone who was a part of it and it's no wonder they don't want the public to see their ridiculous traditions. Every little town here seems to have one of those good old boys clubs and if you leave like my friend did you might as well move out of town(he did) 'cause you are treated as an outcast. They probably fear you will spill the beans on their embarrassing antics. Cute outfits too by the way.

A simple Google search will turn up many names of musicians and others supposedly in various Masonic Lodges. A jazz connection.... https://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jul/02/secret-jazz-freemason-history-duke-ellington-sun-raI was asked to join DeMolay (youth version of Masons) when I was a teenager but never went past the first meeting. One of my friends joined the local Masonic lodge as an adult and told me it was no big deal and he eventually got bored with it.
The 'Illuminati' who did exist at one time (18th century) allegedly infiltrated Masonic Lodges in Europe and were disbanded by the authorities in Bavaria or Austria..? This has been written about many times . The conspiracy fans believe they went underground and are still active today and control various orgs like the Bilderbergers , RIIA, CFR, Tri-lateralists, etc. Some like Jim Marrs believe they essentially control the planet or at least those nations that matter... for a real entertaining read try Rule By Secrecy by Marrs. It's out there but very interesting. Edited by dr wu23 - June 06 2016 at 10:30 |

Free Masonery is not a secret society, it's a discreet society: in Paris, they have a museum open to the public, from tuesday to saturday, from 10.00 to 18.00.
Not exactly a dark and elusive sect... |

I was invited an event a local lodge about ten years ago. The father of my girlfriend at the time was a freemason and got her to invite me to the 'ladies night' I made my excuses and declined, having convinced myself I was being sucked into a world of drinking chickens blood and rough orgies with kidnapped drugged local virgins..
I was being foolish of course, but even so I have no desire to have anything to do with secret societies. If something is secret it's secret because someone feels it needs to be hidden. IMO.. |

Different or not, they are akin anyway. In the Scottish Rite, the 18th degree is called Knight Rose Croix. But back to topic, there is an entry about masonnic music in the Dutch section of Wikipedia, mentioning a Dream Tgheater song called Rite of Passage, two Alan Parsons Project album covers, Mozart, Haydn, Sibelius, PPijper and some others.

What's the deal with this? Seems like a rather creepy "secret society" thing to me. And too close to religion (cult?).
